Re: Tech. Wheels and Tires

well...i was a fool. did end up kinda with the wrong combo but i'm ending up with 4x 8.5j rims. and thinking it might actually help my ride.
do you recommend 245/40.r17 or 245/45r17

Re: Tech. Wheels and Tires

Reading this thread got me thinking again.... I know when I purchased my tires I did the calculations and found they were almost exact for a 8.5" front rim and 9.5" rear rim. I ended up with 245/40/18 in the front and 275/35/18 in the rear of BFGoodrich g-force KDW.

Now I wanted to re-check my calculations and couldn't find the specs for both sizes on the manufacturer website. I found one at the bfgoodrich site and one at tire rack:

Tire rack:
245/40/18
25.7" diameter
809 revs/mile

BFGoodrich site:
275/35/18
25.6" diameter
814 revs/mile

Using an online tire calculator shows two entirely different revs/mile (784 and 788) compared to the specs I found online. I'm thinking the only way to be sure of the circumference and diameter of the tire would be to actually measure it myself which I will attempt when the weather warms a bit and then see what I get for calculations. BFGoodrich doesn't supply tire diameter specs on their website, I didn't check other manufacturer sites. Also, the diameter I am sure would change slightly when mounting a rim depending on the rim (ie that stupid stretched tire fad)

It looks like BFGoodrich no longer makes a 245/40/18 in the tires I have. I'd have to change all four tires to 245/45/18 front and 275/35/18 rear which would be about as close to perfect as possible in that model tire.

From BFGoodrich website:
245/45/18
26.8" diameter
777 revs/mile

275/40/18
26.7" diameter
780 revs/mile

Re: Tech. Wheels and Tires

2010 Camaro steel wheels. WILL NOT FIT... correctly without a little modification. If you are not driving and just need wheels to throw on there. You can use a 1/4 spacer on the front and rear. Also... You will not be able to use the stock Camaro tires (245/55/r18). They are too large for our trucks. They rub the cladding. :(
Also 2010 Camaros use a larger lugnut so the centercap will not fit unless you change out the lugnut covers.

18x7.5x38mm offset

The Front wheels look good with no spacer but that requires you to have the center of the wheel bored out to fit SyTy.
The Rear look good with a 1" adapter. But you have to grind a little bit off of the stock lugnuts. A 1-1/8 would work perfect if you can find them.

Re: Tech. Wheels and Tires

I'd like to try these on my teal SoGT, maybe with smaller profile tires, if and when I get it finished. Repaint the wheel argent. A kind of updated stock wheel look.

Re: Tech. Wheels and Tires

I ended up going with the norm.

17x9-1/2 (56mm offset) front with 275/40zr17
17x11 (50mm offset) rear with 315/35zr17

Re: Tech. Wheels and Tires

That vid was enlightening, never would have thought. Sure would have lost that bet... :)

I like the chalk method. When I mentioned rolling radius I was, as usual, thinking big trucks. The chalk is probably a tad more accurate and doesn't require any math.

I don't buy that video for a minute. Sorry. You'd need to run it over a much greater distance to draw any real conclusions. A single revolution isn't going to cut it.

I am in need of buying new tires for my typhoon. I have always wanted a bigger tire, but I love my lightweight BBS rims. I can see the alternate tire size for a Typhoon is 255/50/16 compared to the 245/50/16 stock size. The problem is that there are very few daily tires that are made at 255 and the price is much more. Do I splurge for a 255 (mostly racing tire) or do I just bite the bullet and stay with a 245. My question is what tire should I buy? What is your recommendation? 255 or 245? Racing like Nitto or just stick with what works? (cheaper) I am pretty sure I am only going to put a few thousand miles on my truck over the next few years, during the summer.

255/50/16 is the 84-87, and some 88 C4 Corvette size. The peeps on Corvette Forum have been lamenting the lack of availability of 255/16's in a street tire for several years. BFG G-Sports are now licensed to Coker Tire for reproduction. Supposedly, there was a run of 300 tires, (75 sets) last Fall, they sold out in less than a week.

The guys on CF are going to 245 if they want to keep their stock wheels, and a street tire. Others are going to 17" wheels, but the choices there are also limited. The 315/35/17 "ZR-1" rear tire that may SyTy peeps have used for decades is also almost NLA in a street tire.

If you want a street tire, you're stuck with 245's.
