MLS gaskets are the way to go in my opinion. You need to have a smooth enough surface on the block and heads though for them to seal. I also clean everything with brakeclean and then coat the head gaskets with copper coat, let them dry till they are just barely tacky to the touch, then torque them down.

or the other side of things, Victor Renz (sp?) cause its better to blow a gasket than something else :2cents:

Cometic = MLS.

Got em on mine and expecting good things from them.

Never heard of applying copper coat - would have thought that would interfere with the gasket.

The copper coat is just a little added protection. I ran a honda b16a engine with the stock 10.5:1 pistons and 15lbs of boost from a t3/t4 turbo and never had a head gasket problem using the stock honda mls gasket and copper coat.

I ran Cometics on the 4.3, the heads and block were freshly cut to the specified smoothness (RM i think its called), and i had ARP studs. I installed them bone dry like Cometic told me to. The first set I got about 200 miles on the street and 3 passes at the track and they blew. Cometic was cool enough to send me a new set thinking they were defective somehow. That set lasted a little longer but gave up too.

On the V8 now I have the factory GM 5 layer MLS gaskets and I copper coated them and have ARP studs. On every turbo motor ive had that i used that copper coat on i have never lifted a head gasket, It definitely makes a difference.

Re: What are the best Head gaskets to go with?

is this stuff common? all I can think is that copper is a great conductor and the heat it carries away could help prevent a gasket from overheating, weakening and failing.

hmmm....wonder why I have never heard of it before in 3 years of being on the board.

Jeff - you use it? If I blow my Cometics I'll give it a go.

I used it on the last assembly as the head gaskets were used at that point, probably use it on the 3rd assembly on same gaskets. Never blown yet and lots of guys mention the MLS gaskets are reusable.

Re: What are the best Head gaskets to go with?

I used Fel-Pro MLS and ARP bolts. Freshly machined block and heads for the gaskets and put them on dry. They have a rubber like coating on them around the water passages. Anyone have any pros or cons of these gaskets?

Re: What are the best Head gaskets to go with?

Just ordered the Fel-pro MLS gaskets via. autozone $61.00, will be in Thursday, was told not to use the copper stuff on the gaskets, this is coming for some one that has A Mustang that runs 7.9's in the 1/4 almost 190mph. put them on dry.

You are referring to the RA or "roughness average". It was discussed here. I intend to use Cometics on my build when I get around to it.

Did he work at autozone and claim that, or did you actually see his car?

FYI: All guys at autozone own or have a buddy with a mustang that runs fast.

No I have been to several races with him, runs down there at Beach bend, last race of the year for the NMRA. His shit rolls, runs BS3 did have speed pro like mine A few years ago. I took the heads off today & took them to the machine shop & he said they look fine. So gaskets will be here tommrow, hope by Sun. it will be back up & running. we will see.
