Dave, what made you pull the pan? Regular check or making some type of noise. If it was anything other than a regular check, I would drive the Ty instead. How many people would be able to say (besides yourself) they took their SyTy on a 3500 mile trip because they did not think their other vehicle would make it?

Off subject, I sprayed that Monte frame with the GM Recon black we spoke of. It is the right stuff. Nice sheen.

If the filter looked clean at the last fluid change and you have the time before you leave, then I would get it taken care of. It would at least be a "peace of mind" comfort thing. 3.5 weeks of wondering if a failure is just down the road is not good.

BTW, the chassis black needs time to "calm down" after application (read as; a week of more depending on weather conditions). Spray it straight out of the car. No activator ect... Time is your friend

Where are you going?

Boston (Marlboro) for NCRS Regional Sept 17-19. Then to Ft Lauderdale to work on a boat for 10 days. Tucson AZ for a 1-day Chapter judging meet, up to Breckenridge, CO for a few days, and home about Oct 7.

I have a lot of material and supplies to take to the boat. Need the room. This is the longest one I've done in any car.

Dave, on your way down to Ft Lauder, you know you have a pitstop place at my house if you need it (Daytona Beach area).

Wow Dave.... that's a long trip! Be sure and take some cold-weather clothes for Colorado...my nephew lives in Vail and he says they've already had to scrape ice on the windshields.... you know what it will be like in October :D

that silver color is the color of the front pump bushing. I"d be careful. the more they wear the closer you get to spinning the bushing and have a bigger problem. prob you have now is that to replace that bushing requires a teardown of the pump and some good knowledge of how to put it back together. also if it's whining then you also need a pump rebuild. which if done right should cost about $300.

Cool house to be warming up in the mountains!

On your trip eastbound up 44 through St Louis I am about 20 minutes outside the city, right off the highway if you ended up in the heart of the midwest and needing a break.
Or if its lunch time and you want to grab an authentic Italian lunch on "The Hill" my work and the Hill are both literally a block off 44 once you get downtown.

Up-date: I pulled the trans and front pump this afternoon. The pump bushing is toast. All the babbitt is gone, and only the steel backing is left in the pump housing. I'm glad I decided to fix it before this trip.

My trans guy is building and sending me a pump. (I don't trust myself to do one myself, and he doesn't mind). He thinks this was caused by a torque converter issue, and wants me to replace it as well. So I will. The rest of the trans looks really good. Even the band which usually gets burned on the corners after this many miles (115K) looks like new.

You more than welcome to stay/visit/meet up while your in Marlboro. I live the in the next town over, but it probably takes 30 minutes to drive to.

Re: 4L60e filter contents: what is it?

Well, after the pump and drum was out, my friend Rick the transmission builder said I still had a reverse problem that I hadn't found. He was right, so I took the rest of it apart. The lo/rev clutches were badly worn. The piston was hitting the rear planet assy. That's where the aluminum came from.

Way to go Dave. I am sure that you are relieved and your trip will have one less worry.

BTW, I bet when you drive thru Connecticut, you would be very close to where I am. I work all along the Rte 84 highway in the center of the state. I'll pm you my cell in case you need anything while in CT. There is supposed to be an all aluminum 427, all original car about 30 minutes of the highway. Could hook you up if you wanted to.
