Gee Matt, looks like there's a concensus! ;)

1. disconnect all aftermarket stuff at battery
2. disconnect and remove MSD
3. See if problem is still there.... :D

Hang in there buddy, you're almost there!

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Going backwards, Matt, when you did the engine rebuild the first time, what if anything did you do to the truck when the engine was out? Did you paint anything or powercoat the frame at that time? Something happened at that time. Think of what you did. Even spraying paint into threads of a bolt hole could cause issues with proper grounding.

Question for Wyo. Shouldn't injectors be shielded for interference like what we are thinking? They have to live a life in extreme circumstances in many ways. Your thought plays right into my mechanical theory so I'm not bashing, I'm just curious.

Matt, I make it to Englishtown in 2.5 hours so your house should be a breeze. If your having second thoughts about my Prius (at least it is not Jeff Dunham blue), I could drive my supercharged Impala SS, my Twin Turbo Supra, the Sy, the L78 Chevelle SS396, a Monte SS or something else. I wouldn't want to gay up the neighborhood!

:rotf: my neighbor has a Honda Fit, you'll fit (no pun intended) right in! Lol

When I had the motor out I degreased the frame and spray painted everything including the block and accessory brackets. I also relocated the battery to driver side by the oil filter and made up new cables. I also re-did all the wire looms in the engine bay and made them Red... Maybe that's my problem? Lol Trying to think of anything else....

Fixed yet, Matt?!? ;)

You're only about 20 minutes away from finding the cause!

I highly doubt that lol... I had a busy weekend so I didn't get to look at the truck. Hopefully tonight I can get a chance to look at it. This week is going to be a busy week because I have to get my racecars/trailer/motorhome ready for 3 week racing trip in florida. I'd love to have the truck fixed before I leave!

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Mail me your keys if it is not fixed before you leave. I will come down, tow it home, fix it, return it before you get home and mail back the keys. You would only have to pay for any parts needed for the repair (if in fact there are parts needed - I think you have replaced most all the parts. Can't pull off any body work and a full repaint within that time period, sorry.

No actually Bradenton Motorsports Park, and Palm Beach international Raceway (formerly Moroso Motorsports park). There's a bunch of $10k to win 1/4 mile races and $5k 1/8 miles races.

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Don't leave the keys under the mat. You either need to leave them with a neighbor or mail them to me. I busy as heck but 3 weeks should be enough for me to pull this off. or

I need a vacation. I like Florida and I like drag racing. Maybe I can polish the wheels on your dragster when your in the pits.

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Take that offer and run with it!!

Which one? I really want my truck straightened out but I REALLY hate polishing wheels! Hahaha :rotf: :D

I've got a few more things to try that will hopefully resolve this but if not and Jim is serious I'd love to have another set of eyes looking at it... Especially since It will just be sitting untouched for 2 weeks. Hey jim get it fixed in the first day then drop it off at my buddy and fellow racer Dave Miller's shop in CT and he can do the paint and body work. I swear the paint faded and more rust formed from it sitting 4 months than it did driving it since 2005!

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Every time I have ever installed an MSD, it states clearly in the instructions not to wire off of the alternator. May or may not be your problem, but if the instructions say not to, then I wouldn't.

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Its not technically wired off the alternator. Its wired to the junction block on the firewall which feeds the cab of the truck. Its sees the same "13.8 volts" that the battery sees. I think I'm going to rewire it to the battery even though its so nice and neat the way it's wired now.

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Maybe I can fix this (with help from a couple of local guru's) in a day they fly to Fla and polish wheels. You'll have the best of both worlds.

What shop does Dave Miller own? Bet I have run into him somewhere (being an appraiser for 25 yrs, I have been just to about every shop).

Back on subject. I'm going back in time. The problem started when he did an engine rebuild and reinstalled the engine. There was no MSD back then but the problem was there. Needless to say, I don't think it is the MSD. If it has anything to to with the electrical system, it may be paint in the threads of a bolt hole (run a tap thru), paint on parts where a ground it trying to be made, maybe a broken wire in the harness when it was moved out of the way to remove the engine. The engine combo changed a second time and the problem did not go away.

The million dollar question, what is making the engine go dead lean at 3 very specific and consistant rpm's?

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

I was going to pull the alternator bracket off tonight and grind the paint off the contact points and run a 3/8 tap through the threads but it's cold and raining! I was also going to run a ground cable to the back of the head instead of using the intake bolt. Instead I'm sitting here twittleing my thumbs! I wish my truck was in the garage, but I don't want to keep my El Camino outside. Time is running out before I leave and my number of days I get to actually mess with the truck are getting limited...

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Could the heads being painted cause a bad ground to the spark plugs? From what I see there is no spark fall out to the plugs, maybe the plugs aren't firing due to a bad ground? Pretty sure the engine guy just painted everything including into the plug holes

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Very doubtful. As many times as you have changed the plugs, all the paint would have to be gone by now. A grounding issue with plugs would be a work or no work situation not cause a rpm specific problem.

As long as I have access to Ted's shop & equipment, I'm serious about picking up the truck.

My next target would be getting a perfect ground to the back of the head. I don't think it is the problem, but it would be one more thing crossed off the list.

Looks like there are some nice weather days next week, but you will be gone. Maybe a nice day to have your truck towed. :)
