New engine wont start-FIXED WILL START

I tried to fire the new engine tonight, didnt go so well. I am near 100% positive I had the distributor set right, I double checked the firing order for plug wires. With the distributor set as close to 0 as I could eyeball, it fired for only a second and died. Its puffing out of the exhaust when I try to start. I played with turning the distributor a little each way and a few times it ran but for only a few seconds and it was really rough, then it puffs or backfires and dies. Does it sound like I have the distributor 180* out? Not sure what to start looking at.

try doing the 180 thing. Then see what happends. At least you know you have spark and fuel.

gonna try it in the morning. Its too damn cold tonight. I didnt count the distributor teeth, how many are there? I was thinking 12 so six clicks to be 180.

Just take number one plug out. Disconnect tan wire. have some one bump the motor over with your finger in the number one hole. once it blows your finger out see if your timing mark is lined up. If its off a inch or two manually turn crank to line it up and see where your rotor is pointing. If its pointing at he passenger seat its 180 out. Just pull the dist up 2'' turn the rotor until its pointing at the number one cylinder.then assemble everything back and fire it up!:tup:


If it stiil wont start im betting you need to re-adjust your valve lash's.

From the description my bet is timing. And it's not out 180, it's only out about 1 cyl. Start over as Harmon describes.

Grab the crank pully and turn it with your hands, or get a socket on the bolt in the center of it, and turn it with a ratchet.

Anyone have a good method of manually turning the engine over.

I put a 3/8 socket on the alternator pulley.... you have to push in on the side of the belt to give it some traction, but it works fine.

Make sure your rotor button is installed correctly.

Bump it with the starter to get the timing mark close the use the alt as mentioned. Easier than you might think.

OK so I found TDC of compression stroke by loosening #1 spark plug, I rolled the engine and waited until I heard air hissing past the threads. I made sure by going around one more time to see if it hissed on the second stroke, it didnt so I am sure I am on tdc of compression. When I got the engine back it was at tdc of compression, but the timing mark on the balancer was not sitting in the 0 mark, it was about 4 degrees not sure how much difference this will make, I really need a way to be 100% that I have it dead on tdc. I read a method of using a tube and oil to find the true tdc I may have to try it.

I also walked the distributor around again so that it is sitting like I think it is supposed to. I snapped a pic, does this look right.

I assume you can hear the fuel pump bring pressure up and stop, before you try starting?

Yes fuel pump comes on for a few secnds then goes off.

I just tried again and I got it to run for about 10 seconds, it was shaking very badly and would only start and run with partial throttle. It seems like its only running on a few cylinders. Could this be an injector problem? They sat for 5 months or so, Im not really sure how to test to see if they are firing or not.

if you think it is the injectors unplug the injector harness & spray starting fluid in it just to keep it running for 10 sec. if it is not shaking then I would say A injector prob. but I find it hard to see if they only sat for 5 months. just think you timing is still off A little. Not to far off though. try pluging the brown wire in then start it. see if it clears it up.

Looks to my like from the picture that the pointer it supposed to be the other way ( 180 deg. out ) maybe someone else will chim in.

Sounds like a timing problem.... if your pump comes on then goes on, the system is pressurizing. Have you tried starting it with the brown timing wire disconnected? It looks like your rotor is pointing towards #1 in the pic... check your plug wires again - 654321 - clockwise starting about even with the egr flange.

Actually the rotor an point any direction it wants. However, the dist has to be in a firing position (which it looks like it is in the pic) and the motor has to be at TDC #1. Now the cap term that the rotor is pointing at becomes #1 on the cap and the wires have to be in the correct order from there. 165432 clockwise looking down on the dist.

Still sounds like you've got some wires going to the wrong cyls. 135 drivers side 246 pas side.
