Has anyone broken a 4l80e in a Sy/Ty?

See title, just curious if anyone has. With the ticking time bomb of the 700R4 I have, I am thinking I better stop racing for now. :(

Also, if I DON'T blow my 700R4, is it worth anything to a transmission shop / dealer on here as a partial trade for the core charge of the 4l80e??? :)

Haven't heard of anybody breaking one with a Sy or Ty.....

Parish8 broke a built one in his 4wd Silverado 1500, but he's running a built 408 with a big turbo (and some juice), making something north of 750hp / 1000 ft-lbs at the wheels (I think he snapped the input shaft). But he's got a pretty extreme truck after all, its a 5,000+ lb brick running 10's, or maybe faster, haven't checked lately.

But the good news is that the 4L80E is a WHOLE BUNCH stronger than the 700R4 / 4L60E ever could hope to be. Parts are a fair bit bigger and the whole shifting strategy is a lot better.

And, sorry, your core isn't likely to be worth all that much. Somebody on here might want the valve body stuff, but that's about all I think anybody would be interested in.

700r4's are usually priced at $50-100 at my local swap meet. The seller might say it rebuilt, works great, whatever- but its condition unknown until proven otherwise.

I just picked up a 700r4 a few months ago out of a 92 Camaro Z28/IROC (whatever) for free. Supposed to have been recently rebuilt and working. The guy yanked the engine for a rebuild and lost interest in the project.

Yeah the only person i have heard of with a SyTy that is hurting the 4L80E is Ropbert from Sweden, i think ha has some trouble burning up one of the clutch packs after a couple of runs, but he is alot faster than most.

Also the lastest on Parishes truck is just over 1000/1000 at something like 26 PSI and no NOS. And i believe hes gone a best of something like 10.16 or there abouts and puked the engine on that run.

Robert has burnt up 2nd gear clutch. There is some debate on if it is a tranny issue or a shifting/tune issue. To date with probably 400+ passes he has NEVER broken a hard part. He basically has the mid row build Prime Gears is offering.

Re: Has anyone broken a 4l80e in a Sy/Ty?

Parish broke a NON BUILT 4L80E. Junkyard unit with a shift kit(input shaft broke).

The one that did break was attributed to a converter failure. He's no longer using the converter in question.

Robert's 2nd gear clutch issue is, as of now, being attributed to a condition when he was tuning where the truck would die as soon as it hit 2nd gear. He did this repeatedly trying to get the tune right. Eventually, 2nd gear clutches couldn't take the sudden pressure loss repeatedly and finally burned up. With a normal running truck, he won't have that issue.

Re: Has anyone broken a 4l80e in a Sy/Ty?

I have smoked 2nd gear clutches, smoked a Yank converter with "kevlar" clutch, smoked an "unbreakable" Precision triple disk verter, AND broke an input shaft in my '80E. This was in a 4800 lb Silverado with approx 750 rwhp.

The tranny was rebuilt about 5000 miles ago with some good stuff this time...billet input shaft, etc. I also went with the vacuum modulator conversion at that time. So far it works great. This is the tranny I am putting in my Blazer project and I will soon be tearing it down to install the new output shaft. I am anxious to see how the clutches look after 5000 hard miles.

Sorry for being the trans noob, but are these aftermarket trannys or do they come in cars stock?

You are right at the limit. 5000 pounds is where they recommend going to a 10.5" triple clutch. The 9.5" triple clutch won't hold up in a vehicle over 5000 pounds. They should've told you that when you bought the converter. Go with the Alto powerpack and eliminate the waved plate. It makes a LOT of difference.
Also with anything, driver habit has a lot to do with it. Make sure you keep it cool and give it time to cool off in between passes when it's in a heavy vehicle like that. Anything can be broken. You just have to be smart when your doing it.

Good luck on the project! Please put up some pics of it when your done!

No biggie....

The 4L80E is a 4speed auto heavy duty truck transmission, basically a derivative of the TH400 3 speed.

Production started in (I believe) 1990 or 91. Typical applications are 3/4 ton and heavier pickups, vans, cutaways, cab & chassis, and the like.

A typical application would be a '00 and up 2500 Silverado with the 6.0L V8. For that year range the big block and diesel typically get the Alison 5 speed auto.
