Jump starting from alternator?

[4C FED]

Has anyone tried jump starting their trucks using the return line on the back of the alternator?

Seems like it should be OK. Just wanted to check first.

I wouldn't do it. Too much amperage through that post will overload the fusible link on the wire. That wire is not large enough to start the truck. If you want to run another vehicle and charge the battery only, that may work, but do not try and start the truck that way.

X2, Never measured but I'd guess there's between 100-200 amps flowing to the starter when you hit the key then something less while actually cranking.

I have done it before and noting screwed up, but i still wouldn't do it just in case.

While I havent actually "started" my truck that way, I do charge it that way when the battery goes dead as sleepy said....

I have the KB relocate, so the battery is under my bed. When the battery goes dead, I hook up to the back of the alternator and ground out on the AC bracket. Without cranking the Sy, I just let the jump car run for 4-5 minutes. Disconnect everything and the Sy starts right up.

I agree though, actually starting it hooked up like that probably wouldnt net good results. X4

my batt is burried i have done it a ton of times no problems ,just let the running vehicle charge your truck for a few be4 cranking it

Granted, the "trick" on these buried bat setups is letting it charge for a few minutes first. Makes all the difference. Even bat to bat you won't get far if don't do this

yeah plus i also charge mine from that terminal 2,and keep the batt tender hooked up there
