gonna start building me a back-up engine

1987- ’94 WITHOUT BALANCE SHAFT: In 1987, a roller lifter cam was installed, so the block was changed again. Two bolt bosses were added in the middle of the valley for the lifter retainer that kept the rollers properly located on the cam and perpendicular to it. This same basic block was used through ’91 for everything, and in ’92 through ’94 for all of the engines without balance shafts except for one small difference – some of the blocks came with four bolt holes for the tunnel style retainer beginning in ’92. There were several different castings used, including the 10105867, 10172756, 14099073, 14093683 and 10066011 with the two-bolt retainer, and the 10172756, 14099073 and 10066061 blocks with the four-bolt retainer.

found one of the 867 castings. 94 non balance shaft fuel injected roller motor. what crank do i want to use with it. i am going out there in the morning to pick up the block and it is a ways out there so i kinda need some ideas today. got any. i dont want a money pit here either. i am thinking of getting a good block and crank and doing the machine work to make them better. i also don't plan on over 500 hp, i just want it to be reliable.

Re: gonna start building me a back-up engine

alright, well thanks guys.......lots of help. anyways i got a block and heads, no crank yet but i was in a time crunch or i would have had that too. block is an 867 casting and heads are the 113 casting. gonna take them to a machine shop and have them cleaned up now. this will be a kinda long process as my engine in the sy is running fine and i have a few other things i want to work on as well. does it matter which crank i use? lightweight or heavyweight?

Re: gonna start building me a back-up engine

are you sure the 94 motor you have doesnt have a balance shaft?

i have seen alot of motors out of 94 trucks and none of the where non BS motors. i'm not saying it isnt possible, but make sure before you buy. you can tell by looking at the timing cover if the intake manifold is still on (i know this probably isnt much help since you already got the motor)

i would use a heavy crank IMO though i havent seen any definitive proof that one is stronger than the other

Re: gonna start building me a back-up engine

it is not a balace shaft motor. he pulled the heads off a balace shaft motor and the front cover looks to be different. could be wrong. also i go a bare block and there is only holes for the crank and cam.

If you need a oil pickup I have an extra you can have it for just the cost of shipping, bought a spare for some reason and never used it

Re: gonna start building me a back-up engine

the timing cover for BS motors is taller and more egg shaped versus the shorter round non BS cover

your in the same spot i am. i got a syty block and caps and a heavy crank from a member, i got the forged pistons now all i need are rods

Re: gonna start building me a back-up engine

well, just got back from the machine shop.....just asking about prices.....holy cow. machine work is not cheap. plan for the block is 4bolt mains, cryo treated crank, eagle rods je 30 over pistons and of course new bearings and timin chain, not sure what cam to use though. and studs throughout.
