Blue smoke on startup common for sy/ty's?

Both my friends ty and my sy have blueish smoke clouds on startup. He has a fresh built motor with a bov. I have a strong compression stock motor with no bov. Is this just a common thing for sy/ty's? I highly doubt the valve seals are worn...

Mine does it too, especially if it sits for a couple of days, i drive it on the weekends mostly, it poofs out blue smoke at start up and in few minutes it goes away, im sure my smoke is because the valve seals, doesnt seem to effect performance as it runs strong

alot of times gm didnt install any seals on the exhaust side.as soon as the guide wore a little...puff! wont hurt anything.

ive never seen them on the exhaust side, wouldnt they just melt anyway from the heat? infact when you get a gasket set, they only include 6 of them for the intakes.

glad to hear that i'm not the only guy having this problem. i have a 93 ty with 63000 miles. i went to a heavier oil 10w 40 and still puffs but not as bad. has anyone tried to replace the valve stem seals without taking the heads off(snap on sells this fancy tool about $40)
now if there are no seals on the exhaust side, it must be because of the valve guides are wearing so the only true fix would be to knurel the guides. i'm be calling the dealer to see what's a common practice for the repair because it's embarrassing to see a puff of smoke from such a nice ride.

The exhaust side has o-rings, you can buy valve seal for the exhaust side though. I did them with using an air compressor and spark plugs fitting. It takes a while, its one of those $25 in parts 8 hours of labor jobs.

thats what i was going to do. compressed air to keep the valve up and change the seals. does the exhaust side have seals from the factory?

When I did mine, it just had o-rings on the stems of the exhaust side.

When I did mine I installed new valve seals on both the intake and exhaust, no o rings. I will try and find the part # for you. There is a HI-Temp one for the exhaust if I recall.

Sorry to bring back this thread, but does anybody got a part number for Viton valve stem seals for stock valves? I found some on Summit, but I don't know what size to get: Manley Viton Valve Stem Seals

Do I want 11/32, 5/16, or 3/8?
