I was told NOT to use Syn. oil to break in the motor because it will not seet the rings the right way. But the turbo requires Syn. oil to survive. What is A good oil to use to break it in?

Thanks!

I used striaght 30w. You shouldn't be creating tons of heat with the turbo (making boost) since you're breaking in the motor. With good oil pressure and not any crazy turbo usage, you'll be fine. Just keep the oil good and clean and take it easy (hard to do with new motor :D ).

its all personal preference. Even the top engine builders don't agree on it from all the crap i read when i assembled my motor.

Conventional 10w30 is fine for 1st 500miles, change it again to conventional 10w30 again and then after another 500 miles can go to mobil syn or any other syn products.

We ran my old motor on dyno with std 10w30 off the shelf broke it in, pulled filter cut open and looked at oil and fill it back up with new mobil reg oil and made like 7 dyno pulls 605Hp / 630 Ft. Lb.s and then ran for about 500 miles and started using Mobil Syn.

Lasted 2 years of Racing it. Changing set-up a bit and new cam design and some imporovements. Stock Crank, 4 bolt splayed, vortec heads, custom cam, GT35R Turbo.

My :2cents: again is I'd use a multi grade (10w-30), reason being oil is gonna get to things a bit quicker on initial start up. Even if you prelube. But just my opinion.

thanks to you all besides sy1177 LOL.. I think im going with the stright 30. I got 2 responces to the 30wt. Not saying that all the others are bad, because if I did I would not have askes this question in the first place..

Thanks!!

Re: what oil to break in the motor?

Best I've ever seen and used is Valvoline 10-40 Racing Oil.... don't even know if it's still around really. It used to have the highest detergent content of any oil and would literally suck any contaminants off the internals. We would change it after 20-50 miles, then every 500 till 1500 miles on street motors, then go with oil of choice.
Works great if you've got a gunked up motor too - 2 oil changes spaced 500 miles apart will make most gunked up internals look almost new - maybe one more change if they're really bad. :2cents:

Re: what oil to break in the motor?

I work for a race team. We cycle 6 engines a year with about 8 rebuilds apiece to get through a season of racing. We break them in on the same oil we race them on. 100% synthetic. We keep an eye on the blow by meter during break in but have yet to have a ring sealing problem. Some of our engines spin to 17,000 but most go to "only" 13,500 rpm. I think be careful of not enough OR excessive loading during the first 15 mins of running and you can't go wrong no matter the oil.

Re: what oil to break in the motor?

I use regular Valvoline 10-30w for break in. I use the Valvoline Racing VR1 oil after break in. It has the additives that most of the syn oils have. I have used Mobil 1 and Royal Purple in the past after break in.

I change my oil in every 500 - 1,000 miles depending if I am running it hard or not. I would rather change my oil more often vs using a syn. Never had a turbo problem.
