A/C causing overheating?

What would cause high engine temps when the A/C is turned on? A/C seems to work OK although not real cold. No unusual noise from the A/C but the coolant temps go up and the check engine light comes on.

Re: A/C causing overheating?

It's normal for the A/C to raise engine temps 20-30*F since the condensor (in front of the radiator) releases the heat created during the compression of the gas. Is yours raising a lot more than that?

Yes, from 160 normal to 220 +/- Enough to cause the check engine light.

I don't think it should go up quite that much.

Are you running an electric fan setup? Have any obstructions to your radiator? If your A/C isn't working well......perhaps the compressor is seizing, causing your engine to work harder. Here in AZ, even in 110+ weather, my temps only go up a slight bit. However, if I'm low on coolant, or I have big air bubbles in my cooling setup, it can cause that. If the pocket of air sits at the coolant temp sensor, it skyrockets. That's typically a tell-tale sign of having air in your system.

When was the last time that you service your cooling system? Radiator may be plug, fan clutch maybe not working right. Even here in Calif my temp only increase 20* to 30* with the A/C on when it 120* outside.

If you have the stock setup still, get a new fan clutch and replace your fan with this one for a cheap upgrade. 2001 GMC Safari GM part # 15976889 list price $71.78, my cost was $50.24

Radiator is clean and serviced. New fan clutch. New fan blade for Astro van, No air trapped in system. Runs cool and fine until AC is turned on. No sound from AC or belt.

Do you have anything in front of the ac condensor like a huge transmission cooler, engine oil cooler, air-2-air core?

This is gonna sound bad, but not meant too. When your temp is climbing, with the A/C on, in park, engine idling. Do you feel a increase in airflow from the fan clutch engaging? Does the airflow increase if you raise engine RPM?

The reason I ask this is because the 1st time I service the cooling system on my truck I replace the bad stock fan clutch with a aftermarket HD type fan clutch. It work fine for about 1 month and then I had the same problem that you describe. At an idle the airflow felt find:tup: , but as you increase RPM the airflow was dropping off and the temp kept going up:tdown: . I can't remember the fan clutch type (Hayden or Imperial) Made by the same company, but different part numbers. Any way the only way I fix my problem was to go to the stealership and buy a factory one. Just my :2cents: . The other thing to check is the airflow thru the A/C exchanger and the radiator core. as they can plugged up with bugs and pine needles. I hope this helps you.
