Is it worth it to remove this for engine swap?

I have the motor ready to be dropped in to the Sy. Its time to pull mine out. Do I remove the fenders radiator support to make it easy on myself or am I creating unnecessary work for myself? I like the idea of nothing around the motor for the swap. FYI I do still have the ABS and all the componants attached to the fenders.

When we removed the turbo, we wouldnt have been able to do it w/o the inner fender removed. I'd say it would make things a bunch easier. There are 3 bolts on the front side and a few others throughout. The left hand side definatley has a lot more stuff there though. When I changed the steering shaft it would have been nice to have the inner fender out of the way but I still managed. Do you have the front wheels removed? That will help also.

I have the inner fender linings removed already on both sides. But im thinking the fenders and the front so that the motor can come out the front instead of up and over.

Ild leave the fenders and core support alone. But like said above, pull hte inners. I pulled mine once and just left them out.

Like TYTILLIDIE said, I agree. I've have swapped motors and completely parted out S10s. If you remove said items, remember that they can be a PITA to realign when reinstalling. If you still had the inner fenders installed, then I'd say radiator support. but in your case you risk tweaking the fenders. My advice is to get some protective fender covers and be careful. Good luck.

I took my hood off, wheels off, and inner fenders when I did my motor swap. I only took the hood right before I pulled the engine.

Good point about the reallignment. I will leave off the inner fenders for sure. so what was the plan of attack for you guys on the removal of motor only. Also is there a way of checking if the torque converter and tranny are 100% if the motor is F'd? It would be nice to know now and not when the new motor is already in.

unbolt the motor from the trans, slide the motor and inch forward to clear the alignment dowels, then pull straight up, cause you cant slide it forward anymore.

dont forget the trq converter to flexplate, and motor mounts and all that.

I was able to pull my motor without removing any sheetmetal .heads and block only-no exhaust or intaket and by propping the hood as far as it will go.my :2cents:

I removed everything, makes things alot easier. It doesnt have to be done, but I wanted to realign my fenders anyway to fix some hood shutting issues.

I have done it both ways. Having the whole front clip off makes it more easer, but adds more work then needed. The past two times I pulled my motor, I pull the whole motor out with every thing on still, even the belt.

is there a way to make sure the tranny and torque converter are both 100% with the engine being F'd? Its hard to tell.

No way that I know of. MAYBE THERE IS A WAY but without pullin them out it can't be 100%. Just tackle one thing at a time. :2cents:

thats what I was afraid of. I would hate to install the motor and then realize the tranny needs work. Well it is what it is

On my 98' Sonoma I took off the core support and left the fenders attached. had to be careful because they were flapping in the breeze, but I only had to align them at the front which was pretty easy since I had a reference.

I would suggest that route if you wanted to pull the motor and tranny. I'm planning on pulling the motor out of my 92' Ty with the fenders and core in place and going straight up.

the fence as to what I should do. My thinking is this, For me taking of body panels and installing them is cake, but the motor so much so I thought if that stuff is all taken off it gives me a lot of room to really get the motor in, look around and make sure the wiring is all correct. The motor I am putting in has all the wiring in place everyhting connected. Just disconnected from the ECM and the drivers engine firewall. Easy peasy. Maybe I should stop crying about it and just dive in, I just get intimidated when it comes to motors for some reason. Thaks for all the help guys.

Sadly it was a runner with issues. I had bought it from a guy who got it from someone else. The truck came with AFPR, MSD coil, walbro pump, air to air intercooler. But the guy I got it from knew nothing and took it to a random place to have the motor rebuilt. So when I got it even tho it had the goodies on it now it had crap plugs wires the fuel pressure was off along with the timing and the TV adjustment. I fixed most of it but after 3 good runs on the street I blew a piston ring and the compression on one cylinder is now 60. So I bought this other motor that has the same goodies on it but internally is good too. I will pull mine and rebuild it properly. The problem is the motor never ran well enough, long enough for me to really feel the tranny. A friend who owns a syclone said he feltlike the motor was working to hard to make the truck move. In other words the tranny might be slippin. He may be right or wrong but its really hard to tell with a motor built sub standardly and everything not adjusted properly.

I removed the core support today. It was a very easy job. Ill leave the fenders on although very flimsy but that should not be a problem. I still have all the room to work with which for a first timer like me makes it a lot easier. Ill check the tranny fluid tomorrow.
