Possible GP crossmembers

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

Ok, we'll here is the prototype we came up with. Bolts to the original bolt holes, keeps the exhaust mounts in the stock location yet adds additional clearance for larger diameter piping and dual exhaust if needed. Weight of this sample is 14lbs as pictured using 1.75" mild steel.
What does the factory piece weigh again?

Oh yeah...looks nice!

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

i would have to say the factory piece is about the same weight, maybe 2 lbs less. Didn't weigh it. I would guess production units should weigh about the same as the stock piece.

With this crossmember you will now be able to unbolt it with two bolts and remove the transmission and transfercase all in one piece. The driveshaft loop adds safety in the event of u joint failure, and the design allows for use of larger exhaust tubing and or dual exhaust. And yes the driveshaft loop is per NHRA spec. You would still need one for the propshaft to be 100% legit.

If you are only looking to save weight, i would figure out a new way to support the exhaust and just remove the stock crossmember. However the frame is not boxed in this area and I believe most trucks would benefit from the added support vs. not having anything there.

Mike,

That's perfect, you can put me down for one as well as a 4L80E crossmember.

thanks,

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

That looks awesome Mike:tup:

So based on the way its made what are we looking at as far as price? Also would it make sense to you to make it out of chromoly to save some weight or would that drive the price up too much?

Thanks Mike for building another awesome product for these trucks!

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

Ok, so we've had alot of response and many of you wanted a more uniform looking part made out of chromeoly regardless if the price was a tad higher. So we went ahead and designed what i think is a nicer looking and lighter piece, however the price will be roughly $100-$125 more then the previous version due to the material and time involved. Weight is now only 8lbs (almost half the weight) !!!

Let me know what you think. I'll get a pole going and we'll have to see which one gets the most votes. I'll work on material quotes and factor in build time for approx 25 units and present you all with a price next week.

Brings me back to my starting point then. Will this work with a ls-1/ls-2 swap using the 4l80-e tranny?

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

Mike,

I would prefer the CM version but I would be in for either version. Could you mock up a simple 4L80E crossmember for non torsion bar trucks at the same time :)

thanks,

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

would it save $$$ not welding in the exhaust bracketry mounts ? the 2 flanges and 4 welded spots would save a little time

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

absolutely. still waiting on the production pricing for both the steel and chromeoly version. Most likely stick with chromeoly, since it is light and looks nicer imho.

once we have a set price we can make them w/ or w/o exhaust mounts to save you a little bit

Sounds good Mike:tup:

I am guessing my dad would want the one with exhaust mounts so I think we would take one of each. Probably prefer the chromoly one also since it would be lighter.

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

ok guys, finally finished the quotes.

To keep things simple we are only going to do them in chromeoly. The price difference was only about $50. In terms of options we will offer them with or without provisions for the exhaust mounts.

$295 with exhaust mounts

or $275 without the exhaust mounts.

I would like to have a minimum of (15) bars and we can have them done for Christmas, probably 2nd week of Dec.

Here is the start of the list. Please post of PM me if you want to be added. I would like things finalized by the end of the month, so there are no further delays. I appreciate all your patience.

Ok guys we are up to 8 people confirmed. We had alot more interested in this thread, and i'm not sure if it is bad timing with the holidays or the price was more then you expected. If you are interested, please let me know ASAP. If anyone has some unanswered questions, please email them to me at mike@raceprovenmotors.com

Any chance you'll still be making these after the new year? I'm very interested but with X-mas it's just bad timing. Also, will these be powder coated?
