Later model distributors?

I was in the junk yard the other day and saw about as 98ish Blazer with a cool looking distributor. The plug wires just came out of the side. Then I realized they all were like that. Is there any advantage to this type of a set up?

Someone mentioned that it hits the back of the syty intake. Also that style 'distributor', picks up the spark pulses from a sensor/ring on the crankshaft.

Oh well, I really liked the look of that cap. I know in all the performance catalogs they had the "Correct-a-cap" for the V8's. It was set up like the ones I saw, it would be nice to get that for our trucks at least just to make the plug wires look nice instead of the normal rats nest.
