A/C questions

My AC clutch went out but my system still has r12 in it and it was blowing cool air last time I drove it. I don't have any experience working with ACs and reading posts on converting to 134 is a little confusing. 1st Can i change the clutch on the AC without loosing the r12? If there is no way to avoid losing the refrigerate what all needs to be replaced to convert? The condenser, compressor, accumulator? You should be able to replace just the clutch and coil without opening the system. You can rent the special tools at any Autozone or Advance Auto.
