adjustable wastegate

I was wondering what the benefit/need for an adjustable wastegate is. By this i mean why do our trucks have a stock setting of 8 psi? Would there be any negative effect of having a wastegate that was set to 15 psi?

our trucks run stock with 14.7psi. 8psi is the base boost of the WG actuator. you get 14.7 by the WG solinoid bleeding off boost before it gets to the WG actuator

If you are asking why don't we have a WG actuator with 15 psi base boost, it's because this way the ECM couldn't pull out boost if there is a need for example...

It will only *crack* open, the lowest boost level you'd have CONTROLLED is 15psi.

If you are a performance freak, and monitor your truck's running condition like a hawk... a higher base boost wastegate is a good thing.

so your saying that with a 15psi actuator the wastegate wont open below 15psi?

Correct. This means that the actuator needs to see 15psi before it will open. You can make more than 15psi by using a solenoid to bleed off some of that pressure before the actuator. You could have it set to not open the wastegate until boost is at 17psi instead of 15psi, by bleeding off some of the signal. When boost is as at 17psi, the signal line would be bled down to 15psi, causing the wastegate to open then.

The actuator provides base boost. A boost controller (of some sort) adds to that by bleeding off some pressure, in order to provide a "signal" pressure lower than the boost level.

ok problem is, i had ordered a 20g, aparently they felt the need to ship me a 15psi actuator when i had asked for a 10. I am still running a 2 bar setup, so basicly what you guys are saying is that i have to start fighting with the company i ordered it from now.
