Another valve spring post

I'm dying to hit Mike Lee up for some valvetrain components, but before I do, I want to make 100% sure about the recommended valve springs for my combo:

Vortec heads
Stock sized valves
412 cam
1.5 stock rockers
stock pushrods & lifters

I *believe* I read in previous posts that the 982 conical springs will work w/o machining the valve seat, but they do require new retainers and locks. Can someone verify this for me? Also, is there another spring out there that will fit the stock Vortec seat that does not require new retainers? The 986 springs perhaps? Reason I ask is that I'm trying to keep this as low-buck as possible, and if I could get by with new springs only, then that would be just great. :D

The 982 conical springs will fit in the standard spring seat just fine, the base is the same diameter as the stock springs. They do require different retainers, but the keys (a.k.a. locks) are standard 7 degree keys.

If you're interested, I am selling a whole 982 spring kit, which includes retainers and keys. Email me at calcagno@erols.com , if interested (or look for my ad in the classified section).
