anybody r&r'd a complete syty dash? is it worth the tro

I have a standing request at my local junkyard to call whenever they get a S-truck in, so I can look at the dash. Mine has minor cosmetic damage. I have yet to see a used one I'd put in my Ty.
i have not found an aftermarket source. IIRC GM wants around $490, but they are available.
I R&R'd the dash in my '91 S-Blazer.
be sure to carefully document wire loom routing and attach points to the dash. there was one wire loom-to-dash attach that was a real pain to remove. When installing, getting the defrost and driver side A/C ducts connected is tricky, but do-able.

I have a couple that i can send you that you can get recovered. Both have minor imperfections. All you would have to pay is shipping. I just want to get them out of my warehouse.
BTW - I took the dash out of the sonoma gt it's not for that faint at heart. It's one hell of a job.

Marty, that would be great! I have to admit I have no idea how to go about getting one recovered, but having the dash in hand is obviously a great place to start. The core on mine is distorted (apparently happened while alarm installer was attaching the piezo sensor to the windshield). Let me know how much $ to ship, and we can do it at your convenience. Is there any chance you have a photo showing the flaws?

As far as getting it recovered all you have to do is go to an interior shop and they can recover it. It's very easy to do.
Have you ever seen pics of what a dash looks like after it's removed ??

Also our dashes have aged and some not well. Some look good until you start to take it out and then crumble. I swapped my tan interior in my S-10 Blazer for grey to make a tyclone. You have to be so careful taking the used one out and then transporting it home and then putting it in yours. Our dashes are so poorly made and lack integrity. Good Luck.

BTW - i agree you have to be very careful removing the dash. From Experience i can tell you that you should remove the steering column first as it will make the removal of the dash much easier.

I removed the dash from my S10 and put a salvage one in from a newer blazer with only a few miles on it. I picked up the door panels as well while I was at it. It is a full days job and while you are in there you might consider changing the heater core. I changed my dash and not 2 months later the heater core went pop. I could have saved a lot of time, and a new core is only 20 bucks at the GM store.

i'm pulling mine tonight if possible...the pics are great marty...exactly what i needed to see and more...looks more straightforward than the dodge was but one hell of a lot more wires...my dash was perfect other than the holes that were drilled in it (before it owned me).....no cracks like the "all the way across crack" on the middle of my ty dash....the main reason i have to remove the dash is because they broke out the holesaw again to run 4 stainless braided lines in through the firewall for a cluster of 4 dash mounted gauges...they holesawed right through the passenger defrost vent on through the firewall...so i have a little more welding to do as well as a dash replacement...if i find a nice dash that just needs paint, maybe i could paint it black?.....maybe i could join the holesaw racing team...also good idea on the heater core as was mentioned... thanks again

it came out ok...i pulled the seats first and dropped the steering column down and it came out rather quickly....i'd say around 2 intense hours...the toughest part for me was removing the hvac control setup other than that it went ok...then i cleaned up the interior and pulled the heater core...how the heck do people pull the heater core without the dash loose? it's way up there...

whats up with recovering the dash? never really heard of it...i need to see about having my dash repaired...it's in great shape other than the holes they drilled...mainly because i want to keep the original glovebox sticker ....

We have alot of custom shop here in Chicago. The dash is actually covered in a vynal with a thin foam backing. So they remove the old and replace it with new.
I have no idea what the cost is but it's proabably cheaper then buying a new dash.
