ATR header cracks?

I’ve got the new T3 flange out of 347SS welded to the header, port matched and polished. Next step is coating. Before I send these out, I’d like to know if anyone recommends I have any particular weld reinforced. I’ve heard the comment a couple times that ATR headers can be prone to cracking. I assume this is at the welds. I’ve given it a good looking over, and most of the welds look decent, but if anyone has identified a particular trouble spot please let me know.

TIA,

from what I recall being mentioned before the source of any probs people were having was located at the weld points on the exhaust port flanges as well....

the ones I have seen crack are around the collector for the drivers side primary tubes where they all come together. but it also seems from NATS this year that ATR has changed the design somewhat over the years and this problem may not exist on the new ones.

Thanks! I looked'em over good, and the tube to flange welds are actually a little better than the rest - I just wish they would have used a stainless flange...

Good info... thanks for the heads-up. The headers I have are less than a year old, so hopefully I got the latest revision. I snapped a quick pic of the collector, it looks like this:

This is the passenger side collector. The welds don't look too bad. I'll check the driver's side out when I get home tonight. Thanks again!

I have the ATR headers on my 93 Typhoon and have had nothing but problems with them. The last go round I had 13 cracks on the drivers side. ATR was never good enough to tell us that they made brackets to secure the headers in place. My shop has made custom brackets to fix the problem plus the headers have been sent out to get coated to help with my excessive heat problems. At 24 PSI with nitrous kicked in I am approaching 1000hp and the torque at WOT is just pulling everything apart. I am hoping these braces work.

If you would like more information I can put you in touch with my shop who knows the problems with ATR too well.

Yikes!

@ 1000hp your application is a lot more severe than mine will ever be, but I try to make things as fail-safe as possible. I’d like to hear more about the reinforcement brackets. Shoot me an e-mail when it’s convenient and let me know who to get in touch with.

Thanks for the info Tom, and welcome to the board!

Wow, great memory Jamie. Yeah, Tom was an ex-SyTy LIST member, a long time ago.

Good going,
