Is it worth it to go with a custom cam over a comp 415?know it will make more power but is it enough to justify 600 plus dollars?

Re: Custom cam

What's your Goals?? Check out my Build and see how Fast I went with a Custom cam. If your goals are 12s, 11s, then stay with a Comp. Spend the Money on tuning, you can have the best cam out there but if you cant get it tuned properly then it was for not. If its 10s then Custom for sure.

Re: Custom cam

save your money. Buy a off-the-shelf grind cam, aggressive maybe a 422 or 430, depending on heads.

Plenty of trucks make alot of power and go 10 seconds on the 422 cam. If that is what you are shooting for.

Re: Custom cam

I have a "custom" cam from Comp and it wasn't that much, nowhere close. I can get you the info if you like and you can call Comp and see what they say. 1.5 or 1.6 rockers? This cam is for 1.5. I paid $500.00 but that included being degreed by a professional which, I think, was about $100.00.

As mentioned the tune is the key with these motors. A lot goes into building a proper 11 sec motor. IMHO it's the combination, not just the cam, or boost, or whatever.

Re: Custom cam

It's just a street truck with the occasional track (maybe once a year) I have a comp 415 now. But spoke with Morris engines and Tom from sport machines after I put this post up, and said a 415 is basically a step above stock and not meant for a boosted motor. I don't mind doing a custom cam but I was told about $600 to my door

Re: Custom cam

I only paid $3xx for a custom cam from comp cams. The 415 Is designed for na applications, but the specs aren't bad for a turbo motor. .500/.500 210/215 112deg lobes. The stock cam is anemic. .359/.390 179/195 (not sure the of the lobe separation.) IMO a 415 is more than a step above stock, but it is likely leaving some hp on the table.

Re: Custom cam

I was thinking of going that route.....But from what it seems Morris has the golden cam specs. I'd like to get the most I can out of it.....But what specs would be nice for my setup?

Re: Custom cam

What do you for a build? The Steve Morris cams in video I have heard sound pretty aggressive and seem to have a lopey idle.

Re: Custom cam

My cam is: Intake .502/224 dur. Ex .484/230 dur - Lobe sep 114 requires adjustable rockers to properly set the the lifters. Slight lope at idle but only pulls about 10" vac idling in gear. As someone else said here "scary on the street."

Re: Custom cam

Oops, just saw what heads you have.

I ran a Comp 415 before going to a Steve Morris cam. It did make a difference, but it depends on your ability to afford things on if it is justified. If you can afford it, then it is a worthy upgrade. If funds are tight, money may be spent better on other things. Alky injection is around that cost and allows you to safely run more boost and timing.

Re: Custom cam

I already have alky....I keep forgetting to list mods I have hahaha. After talking to Tom and Steve they said it's insane the difference a custom cam makes over a 415

I'd have to agree, at least somewhat. I went from a 412 to this cam and there was a definite difference. Very difficult to quantify something like that though. Turbo motors take an entirely different cam than a NA motor. That's where folks like Steve can really shine if you got the $$.

What are you using for tuning? Stand alone or chip or code59, etc.?

Re: Custom cam

Turbotweak for the moment standalone later down the road. But have the scan gauge to monitor knock. And sport machines has a Morris cam package paired with Eric from turbotweak

Re: Custom cam

I can tell you that the single best mod I did to my truck was the Holley HP. I installed it before I switched to the Steve Morris cam, and the Holley made all the compensations necessary. I am kind of a lazy fellow, and the Holley made tuning a snap. I bought the Holley from Alex at Steve Morris. Again, what you do with the truck depends on your budget.

Re: Custom cam

yeah im more than double what I had originally planned to the holley will have to wait. my main concern is I don't want to have huge drivability issues and have to rev the piss out of it to make power. still stock crank and block. when I talked to tom at sportmachines he said shift points should be 6k or a little higher

I have stock block, not filled, and stock crank turned 10/10. I shift at about 5300 rpm. My truck is not a race truck, but simply a fun driver/toy. I have zero drivability issues, it always starts and drives great. I even kept my A/C.
