Dancing Oil Pressure

My factory oil pressure gauge is going nutz. It pins itself upon startup and when it warms up at idle it reads right. But as soon as I touch the gas it pins itself again. Driving around - it reads right if I let off the gas but pins at any little bit of throttle. Is the oil pressure sender bad or what's up with it?

I would guess its the oil pressure sending unit. Mine is going also, it jumps upto 80psi every once in a while (especially when cold)

hahaha, mine completely bottomed on me a couple years ago, replaced the sending unit and the darn thing still bounces like its on a trampoline. It averages around the correct value, but it bounces around like mad. I think its all part of the bad ground I have somewhere in my electrical system that I can't find. Anyone know where the master ground is for everything but ignition?

This is exactly why I get mechanical guages, and use copper line.

I agree with Lynn, just get a mechanical gauge and always be sure of what pressure you are running. I just totally disconnected my stock sensor and put the line to the mech gauge where it went. At first I thought it might set a engine light off but in the 6 years since that's been done I never have had any trouble.

Commonly, elect gauges peg when shorted to ground. Frayed to ground somewhere??

how close does the stock oip pres. gauge read. or are all the gauges off. i have tranny temp and boost gauge in my 3 pillar pod. have room for one more so i think after reading this ill get oip pres. gauge. my 88 blazer jumped around i changed the oip pres. switch and till now no problems yet.

The gauge reads fine at idle and accurate. This only started happening when it got cold out. Sounds like I'll be replacing the oil pressure sender. Where is the ground strap that I should check to make sure it's clean?

whay kind of weight oil you running in it

Mobil 1 5-30 - I usually use 10-30 but the store was out of it when I did my last oil change.
