installed a pte52

Adam got a deal and ended up with a pte52 a couple weeks ago. So... He spent last week cleaning up/blasting the parts, and coated the exhuast housing and downpipe with steel-it. ( A stainless steel coating for high temp applications.)

Well, we finished bolting it on last night. Hes running a stock converter, injectors and a t1 16 chip, so we expected the results and took some precautions about the lack of fueling.

Lets just say after riding in that thing, its easy to understand why you'd need a high stall converter. Boost doesnt really build till about 3k +

Keeping boost below 12 psi, we spent an hour or so adjusting the wastegate rod and driving around town.

Its loud and slow! well.. untill the rpms kick up and boost gets in the double digits that is. At that point it starts to pull your head back to the seat and really scream.

now it just awaits its 50# injectors/chip and a new converter.

heh.

damn truck went from low 13s to cant pull out in fast moving traffic...

install was overall easy, nothing mure than ripping out the stock turbo (i went ahead and pulled off the entire manifold too), aligning everything, reclocking the turbo (was on a truck with a2a), run some vac lines and figuring out the wastegate adjustment.

some obvious advice for anyone upgrading....spray all your bolts with some sort of penetrating lubricant well before you work on the truck. I sprayed some on heavy and left it sit for a good week before I went to work. Every nut and bolt came out easy and nothing broke.

im running on a no exhaust setup, just using the PTE downpipe with the extender section and a 3" turndown off that. It's loud and and you can definately hear the turbo whining, even at low speed in vacuum.

now its just a waiting game to get some funds going to build my tranny and get a 3000 stall. i'll just have to settle racing people from 45mph roll ons :)

ive got some pics up.... i'll post more soon:

lookin good.

Gotta be spooling slow in the land of turbo lag.
Get that TC and you'll see the difference in a hurry.

surprized the lag is that bad.

interesting, because my te44 w/.63 housing gets into boost ok. Not that it spools real fast, but I can still get on it and not fear any oncoming traffic. :)

My 60ft times are horrible though, even launching with 5-6psi. So I'm not sure if its a lag problem giving me slow 60' times, even though I'm getting good boost to launch with, or I just need more practice.

Also, I wonder if just the addition of a higher stall TC would lower my 60'?

I know all the other stuff helps, drag radials and having the tune setup just right for a bigger turbo on stock injectors.

Can't wait to tinker with the WB, and get that external put on, now that I have a working laptop agian...

If I ever recover from my wedding / honeymoon this year, maybe I'll start to get back to having some fun with the truck. :D

44 with .63 is smaller and faster responding than a 52 with a .85 a/r... plain and simple. plus your .63 is an older style... the .85 a/r is the PTE custom housing... their .63 is still a bit slower spooling than a regular .63 from Garret in their regular GN parts.

I didn't know his had an .85a/r on it.... DAMN

thought I saw .60 in one of the pics.

ya , i couldn't imagine what an .85 would be like on a stock TC. sloooowwww.

All of the PTE syty exhaust housings are .85 a/r. The pic is of the compressor housing. Yes, compressor housings have a/r also.

I would have liked to have seen PTE make a couple different sizes (maybe .58, .63, .85) of the housing... but as it is now... a truck running 10s, making 700hp or so is running the same exhaust housing as someone running the stock motor, making 350hp or so.

maybe we can pour some jb weld into the exhaust housing and get it to spool faster?

hehe, dog slow, but as everyone knows.. its to be expected.

85 housing ownz...

it sucks for now, but the build isnt done. i got a killer deal on the kit, so on it went.... i dont drive the sy much anymore, so it wasnt a big deal to throw it on and just face going slow for awhile.

next part of the build is ripping out the tranny, installing a 3000 stall ( i will be talking to the guys from roadmaster at KC about their hughes unit they sell) and beefing up the trans internals to support the HP.

I kinda wish i had gone with somethng other than the pt52... oh well.

Any other way to make it spool faster? I've got a 2800 and it still seems lil slow.

been doing the reading, and it seems that with the 85 housing, the smallest you would dare want to go is a 3000 stall.

2800 will spool, but no where near what your wanting.

i was almost considering just going with a cheap 2800, but just doing the research, its a waste of time and rather just wait to throw the money down on the right setup.

that housing is huge, it definately needs a big stall behind it to get desirable performance.

if it makes ya feel better zach, gauranteed with the 2800, your truck is a hell of alot faster than mine is now... :)

the difference between that, and the stock turbo on a external gate with a 15# spring is night and day. You have to hold onto stuff when I mash the pedal...

in adams truck... its like a loud sunday drive.

I am teh kingpin!
is roadmaster going to the nats?

why do i see adam doing the tire change or tune up on my sy in world record time to win that tranny?

spoolup has a lot to do with the motor build as well.

i can get positive boost on the line with my 2800 9/11 and a PT74
i will admit it definately needs more stall, but its really not that bad. if i had it restalled, id prolly only go to 3200. (pte reccommends 3800)

spoolup with the PT74 and new cam feels almost exactly like the PT52 did with the old cam. i can get big boost as low as 2500rpm, and instant spoolup at anything past 3200rpm.

Actually, I think my truck has the 9/11 tcs converter...what stall is that anyone? 2800 or 3000

Im guessing 2800 because the way it feels... but then again, im only getting 12 psi of boost...

P.S. The Sy made it to KC.

All you guys with the big turbos and slow spool. What if you drive around and leave a stop in 2nd gear and then stuff it around 3000 RPMs?? My stock turbo will damn near light 'em up doing this, incredible spool. Just wondering if this "gimmick" could provide fast spool in a limited circumstance on the street.

Ive got my roadmaster tranny with a Hughes 3000 stall TC sitting behind the truck patiently waiting to be installed.

Lag shall be no more.

As far as driving around in 2nd then dump at 3000...dont see the need on a stock turbo. Ians truck pulls hella fast on a slow sloppy stock TC, even with no boost build. That 15# spring in the wastegate makes a big diffrence, seeing how it doesnt start to crack until about 10-12psi.... i loved it when i had this setup on my truck also.... hell, it put ian at a 12.9 on a basically "stock" truck.

For me, now comes the fun of tuning. Wideband anyone?

No no no, you're missing the point. I am saying what if you did that on a stock converter but with a PTE turbo? Would it create a fast spool without swapping converters?

Yes I'll take one, thanks. PM me for my shipping address.
