Rick,

I saw some discussion about plugging off this bypass in other posts. Do U know why we would do that and what it accomplishes ?

Welp for me, it's all about clean oil.
When the oil is cold, that pesky bypass opens up and can let whatever circulate through the motor or the turbo.
I want oil going through the filter first.

The drawback of no bypass is that you may turn your oil filter into a jiffypop looking thing if you get on it before the oil warms up. It's probably a good thing to have if you live in a really cold climate and use your truck as a daily driver.
Or you could buy one the the filters out there that have high burst pressures and do away with the bypass. Moroso, K&N, FRAM are some that make such filters.

Lastly, I don't know about the stocker (PF52?) 'cause I've never cut one open, but some filters come equipped with a built-in bypass.

Rick,

Thanx - some good info. R those special models that have high burst pressure ? I guess if U use real light oil, something like 5/30, then maybe U won't ever bypass, but I've always been afraid of that light an oil w Turbo cars.

I'm installing my engine now so I can consider plugging the bypass. Would we have to plug both bypasses ? Or maybe I can put in heavier springs ?

The only thing special I know about the PF-52's, which R good 4 the GN's also, is that they have an anti-drainback valve. I guess this is for filters that sit horizontal or face upwards, so that the oil can't drain out of the filter when the car is off. Altho' that shouldn't be a problem w the SyTy's, which face downwards.

Myclone has a way to bump up the bypass pressure for the valve in the block. I bought one of those plugs from Perma-cool that just snaps in to plug that bypass.

I don't know how you would remove/modify the one in the remote filter mount. I installed a std. spin on adapter so I could run the -AN lines and fittings, so it doesn't have a bypass.

I ran 5W20 when I first fired my motor up. After the first 15-20 min. I dumped it and then ran the regular 10W30.
I don't know if running 5W30 all of the time would cause any problems in the long run.

Rick,

Wow, I'd like to meet her !

The only reason I have reservations about light oil is that when I 1st owned my GN back in the 80's I worked for Unocal - the one that made the Racing Gasoline.

I was using Mobil 1 15-50 synthetic, and I had the oil analyzed from an oil change after about 3-5 K. The 50 wt, even w this synthetic oil, had sheared down to 30 weight !
