In an effort to move parts from the attic to the truck, I'm in a situation where I need to move my overflow tank. This is part of a snowball situation. Over the years I managed to get two different styles of tanks.
Tank 1:
Tank 2:
The benefit of using the first tank is that I can take the top off to check the level in the tank. The drawback of it is that since it was originally designed for fuel, there is a seal at the top of the tank. I'm worried that with this seal, when the thermostat opens, it will build up enough pressure in the tank that the coolant overflow won't be able to enter the tank and a hose may blow off.
The benefit of tank 2 is that I can feed into the bottom and leave the top open to vent pressure. The drawback is that I can't check the level in the overflow tank. There is no hose going from the top inlet to the bottom of the tank, so there would be no real way for the coolant to be drawn back into the radiator when it cools down if I fed into the top of it.
So my question is if it's a good idea to use tank #1? I could drill a few small holes in the cap to help vent the pressure or in the top of the tank itself. I just don't know if the pressure build up would be enough to worry about.
Anybody have any opinions or ideas? You can see more photos in my PhotoBucket album.
