Reusing cometics? Thoughts?

Sure can't blame you for not wanting to take the motor apart. If you can wait, let me talk to my machinist. He might know who to get a hold of. He got those different thicknesses for me so he might have an "in."

I've got some time Don, it will be a few weeks before I'm ready to put it back together. I saw RPM has 4.00 to 4.040 bore gaskets but I can't seem to find those on jegs, summit or cometics site. They only have 060 bore listed. I'm going to measure the thickness of what's on the truck now as I see you can get a couple different thickness options.

I also have to measure bearings to see what bearings I need, so I'm still compiling parts and have some time. Thanks!

Re: Reusing cometics? Thoughts?

The 4.060 Cometic gasket is the right one to get. It will work with bores from 4.000-4.060. I went with the .040 thick gasket which I thing is the standard thickness. The other gasket available is for 4.060-4.130 bore if I remember correct..(for big ci Bowtie blocks)

That is what I thought but I wanted to make sure before I ordered anything. I'm going to check the thickness of what's on my truck and go with that. Thanks for that info! I needed that confirmation.

Cool. I'll check with my machinist tomorrow, Thurs., and let you know what he says. Not a prob, I'm going that way tomorrow anyway.

Well I didn't learn a whole lot. My machinist just calls them and orders what he wants. He was very busy today so couldn't chat much but here's the number:

1-440-354-0777

Ask for "Mike." Although he may or may not be in tech support now.

HTH a bit.

Thanks Don! No worries. I'm going to finish pulling the motor tomorrow and get it on the stand. Once I break it down I'll compile a list of everything else I need.

Re: Reusing cometics? Thoughts?

Finally have the entire engine broken down. My cometics are .027 thick and I'm debating getting the .040 instead. Probably won't make that much difference buy less compression is probably better.

I wish you guys would use a sensible, consistent method to manage measurements . Like, say, the metric system :D

Re compression, the difference in volume between .027" and .040" is .16cm^3. I doubt you will notice in either case.

Or am I way wrong?

I believe you mean .16 cubic inches, not centimeters

Re: Reusing cometics? Thoughts?

"For every .006" change in gasket thickness you will add or subtract approx .1 points of compression." - some cometic rep

Thicker gaskets slowed my dragster up 3 hundredths and lost .5 in compression. Haha difference I can make it up with boost on the typhoon :)
