Ok in the head there is a square plug . Its not 3/8ths . Its not 1/2. Its not hex , its not torx.

Its square. I need to pull out the plug and put the sender for the gage water temp in.

But I have not the tool to do it ... anyone know where I can get one....

well, sometimes there are odd-ball size plugs like that.
if you cant find/buy a right size, just take an old socket extension and grind it down until it fits.

just make sure you grind down below the manufactured end with the little ball in it. grinding down around that end, with the hollow leaves a weakend tool. We broke it and ruined my plug that way.

cut an extension off below the end and grind from there. stronger tool and hopefully you'll have better luck than i did.

I'd try a metal shop, ask them for cold rolled steel square stock in 4" to 6" lengths, most good shops have quite a bit of stock in between 1/4" and 1/2". It may twist up a bit, the stock has a soft temper so go easy. J B Blaster the fitting before turning it out.

I think I am going to try and grind the extension down.... put one of the dozen or so extensions I have to use...

Sean,

I had to do the same thing... you can go to the hardware store and pick up a piece of steel bar stock.. I thin it was 5/16".. cut off a piece about 2" long.. then use a wrench to turn it out.

if it is like the plug for the oil filter relocation bracket, just use an 3/8 extension. One of those 1/2-3/8 adaptors will work great.

FWIW A company call Power House Tools sells impact sockets (along with a BUNCH of other eng building tools) with the correct end to fit the square femal pipe plugs. I dont have their addy right off but Im sure a google search would find them.

Sounds like an 8mm plug, have one on the rear of the passenger side head on my 3.4 powered S10. I did what everyone else mentioned to get mine out, grinded a trashed 3" wooble extension flat on four sides. If you do this, be sure to dip it in water to cool it as you grind it so that you don't burn the temper out of the steel. HTH's

I used an old craftsman large screw driver, I cut off the tip and the square shaft was a perfect fit.

I think a new thread should be started in the lounge...

" Modified tools "

1. Original tool
2. Modified tool
3. Purpose for modification.

I think there would be several odd things come out of it.

Well I started to make my own tool.... and the cheap extension that I bent before kept bending.

So my friend - why the Snap On guy was at the shop got a proper 5/16th's square plug tool.

Plug came out of the head no problem. Only cost $10 for the right tool too.

Cost me $10 in time , and effort screwing around with the extension.

im a little late for this, but how about welding a nut on the end of the plug and use a wrench to take it out?

The plug was already on the head , the head was on the motor , the motor was in the car.

Plus I had to use it on the other side to fill the hole on that side.

The best thing was getting the correct tool for the job.
