Starter gear clearance

OK, I loused the teeth count completely up (goin by memory.. go figure).

You have what is referred to as the "big" fly wheel. 168 teeth. "Small" one has 153.

After looking at the pic try this (if you havent already)...

Use the other two holes in the actual starter. This will seem like your going the "wrong" way with the starter but use the "outer" two holes in the block to mount it.

Lemme know how that works and while Im out in the garage today playing "how many times can you swap a 700R4 in a 2 days" I'll check out some starter mounting configs on some of the bare blocks I got taking up space..

Been there, done that.
Makes you a tranny R&R expert really fast.

I got my tranny back from the shop yesterday.
It looks pertty.

I'm going to dink around with the starter some more this weekend when I put the tranny back in.

Lumpy, while your out under the truck, could you measure the distance from the end of the crank to the flexplate?

Thanks,

Rick,

Id be glad to measure it but Im workin on towclone right now. Full sized GMC, 2WD, TBI 305  , 700R4, etc.. The measurements you need are prolly the same. I'll do some figgerin and get back at ya.

Sheeesh, there is ten times the room to work on a full sized truck!!! Still aint a fun job though since I think the front seal in the trans has been leaking since the truck was new. BIG greasey, slimey, nasty mess under there...

Rick,

From the very back of the crank (where TC "pilot" fits) to the flex plate I measured:.02420"/6.15mm.

Measured it with a Mitutoyo dig depth mic.

Keep in mind that this is on my full sized 1990 GMC with 305 TBI/700R4. 99.9% sure this is the same as the SyTy stuff other than it has the "big" flex plate.

I havent got a chance to tinker with any of my bare blocks/starters as Im still fighting the tranny R&R.. Like trying to wrestle a VERY greasey freakin bear that likes to puke Dextron out... Ughhh.. What a mess...

Rick,

Did you ever get the starter issue resolved??

I poked around in the garage with some bare blocks and found something interesting.... Well, to me anyway.

I have a 85 astro van 4.3 block(4bbl CARBED, two piece rear main, mech fuel pump, etc) and it has TWO mounting positions for an "inline" starter bolt pattern where the later 4.3s(88,90,91) I have only have ONE position for mounting a "inline" bolt pattern starter. Hmmm.... Never noticed that til now..

Just checkin to see if you got the starter to work... Im have a gut feeling that the flex plate you have may be too big for the starter. I hope Im wrong tho..

To busy running around today.
I'm gonna tackle it in the a.m. tomorrow.

RAACCR has the same flexplate.
It's an SFI approved/certified, but I don't think it's any thicker. It is welded on both sides.

I threw my stock flexplate in the can, so I lost my comparison piece.

CVR said they didn't have any shims and couldn't understand why it didn't fit.
I'll figure something out. It's just delaying the tranny installation, that other big obstacle in the middle of my garage.

Rick,

I was referring to the diameter when I said "bigger"... Anyway, lemme know what you come up with. I have a "few" bare blocks taking up space that I will gladly mess with to try and help you out.

Drop me a mail if you want to save BW...

I put the stock starter on this morning and it fits fine. I have about 3/16" clearance between the starter pinion & the flexplate.

So I'm off to ACE to get a big hole saw so I can make a shim.

Thanks for your help.

So I made the shim and now it looks OK.
I have a little more than 1/8" clearance between the two.

So I'm gonna run with that a see what happens. Might need to add another 1/16" to it.

Glad you got that worked out. The prob you ran into is a new one on me... Hope it works out and ~1/8" should be fine.
