Talk me out of this....

I have been autocrossing, drag racing and even done a track day in the SY....and loved it.

BUT....

The syclone is still a truck and I feel it needs to be treated as such.....

I recently discovered this:

I am very strongly considering buying another Syclone to compete in these events. (Hammer Sy is too pretty at this point.)

Any thoughts?

My plans are to quickly go for fiberglass bed and front fenders ( saving OE cladding) Stock height with sway bars (coil overs soon). AWD + Turbo + Me = Dukes of Hazard rerun

Thoughts?

A beater SyTy would work, but trying to find a reliable one might be difficult. By the time you would fix up most beaters into a reliable race ready truck you usually can find a nice example....

Don't do it to a Sy. Buy a rusty Saab 9-3T like the others in the video.

Re: Talk me out of this....

My other option is getting a beater s10, but the cost of upgrading....I can buy a beater Sy and be ahead. No interest in a TY or blazer....Sorry Dave.

I see a lot of broken t cases and front diffs in a sy if you rally it, L35 awd blazers are tipsy, a v-8 s-10 might be a setup that would be reliable tho.

Re: Talk me out of this....

Im thinking do a drivetrain swap into a normal S10 to make it AWD and have at it....unless you can find a seriously beat up Sy on the cheap. The thought of broken cladding and tearing up the interior with non stop dirt would be costly. If its going to be a full out rallyX truck, maybe strip the interior of everything of value.

Cover up the much of the bottom end with a belly pan, since the first sizeable mound of sand you come up on, the trans cross member would dig in and probably cause some fun damage down the road.

Re: Talk me out of this....

Why would you use a SYTY drive train? They can't even drive down the road under semi-normal conditions with out falling apart. You'll be that guy that everyone talks about while they are towing you off the track....."why does that guy insist on using that beat up POS, doesn't he get it yet"?

BTW, when did you move to Denver?

Re: Talk me out of this....

By a 4wd Dime, swap out the front diff parts form a bravada (axle in the front diff and such), remove the 4wd actuator parts and you're AWD.

Build a turbo or buy a used powerdyne/vortec/etc. blower.

If you're going to do it, you're also going to need to find an iron front diff. I come across them once and a while. I know this because I sold an iron front diff to a guy in Brazil that did Baja/RallyX in his dime and used to DESTROY the aluminum diffs. Like break them into about 10 pieces.

Seems like a real sin to ruin a perfectly good Sy when you can build a comparable or better dime do to the same thing. There's also a site that specializes in dime prerunner parts too.

If you want one shoot me a PM, I know where there are a few..... or were i'd have to check. Most people didn't know that GM made iron versions with built in drain plugs unlike their aluminum counterpart.

Trick to finding them is 95 4wd 5 speed trucks, typically Blazers are the best source....some 94s but typically always 95s.
