Tdc?

Re: Tdc?

Is it running a v8 timing vs a v6? Probably a stupid suggestion...

When I said set it all to 0, I meant: zero the gun, zero the settings in BS3. Does the strobe go off at 0 degrees on the balancer?

What is the device on the block that tells you what advance you are at? Is it the right one?

Re: Tdc?

something i noticed on mine. The distributor has 6 pickup points for the 6 cylinders, and the rotor only goes on one way... but the cam gear has an odd number of teeth. So depending on which way you put the cam gear on the distributor shaft, you could be half a tooth off, causeing a little bit of off-sync in the distributor.

Also, what is the crank ref angle, and inductive delay set to

I had a problem with mine, where i picked a random number for my ref angle, and the ECM would not adjust timing below that point. I randomly picked 18deg, and even though my tune commanded less than 18deg, it would not pull the timing below that. so i switched it to 6..

If you verified TDC with a piston tool, and saw that it lined up with 0 on the balancer, and dist rotor. I would set the timing light for 30, and turn the distributor until everything matches BS3

I think I will try your last suggestion. I think that this would sync the ECM to the dizzy
Or vise versa. It is worth a shot. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Re: Tdc?

okay!!! I started the truck with the bigstuff conected and waited for it to settle into an idle.
I then shot the balancer with the light and turn the dizzy until it was close. Then i locked the timing out in the ECM @30* and shot it with the light set @ 30* and rotated the cap until it was spot on TDC, The truck idles perfect and the afrs ar good. I will take it for a spin a little later. i needed to sync the dizzy with ecm. i will post the outcome tonight.

Re: Tdc?

we would have to assume the new balancer is spot on. But with the old balancer did you use a piston tool to verify TDC? Did you rotate then engine forward to the stop, then backward and split the difference?

Re: Tdc?

Personally, I'd ditch the light unless it's required. It's adding variables to the problem. Use a standard timing light with no bells or whistles. No dials to turn. Nothing to set. Just hook it up, aim it at the timing pointer and hit the trigger. Nothing to screw up, get wrong, dial in incorrectly.

Re: Tdc?

Drove into work with it. It runs much much better. Now I need to get
Ahold of the tuner to make sure all is well. Thanks again for the input,
