Valve adjustment

Re: Valve adjustment

I hot lash. Get the oil plugs that clip onto the rocker arms, $5 at any car parts store.
1. Warm engine up to operating temp then shut down.
2. Remove one valve cover and install oil plugs
3. Verify nothing is going to fall in the valve train and start the truck.
4. Using a 3/8" drive, 6" extension, swivel and 5/8" socket start with back valve and loosen until you hear it ticking. Tighten until ticking stops then put 1/2 turn on for final torque. The engine may momentarily bog and then come back to idle. Repeat down the line.
5. Repeat for opposite side.

Note: The driver side valve cover is a bitch to remove. I had to pull the Alt and coil bracket then reinstall alt.

You can remove the drivers valvecover by removing the bolt that it catches on. The alternator doesn take much time to remove though. I use small binder clips to hold the valve cover gasket in place while putting the valve cover back on.

I have adjusted valves with the engine running and when off. Tips for finding zero lash adjust with the engine off is the same as all SBC. CompCams had a good write up. If your usin compcams 875 those have very little preload, the typical 1/2 turn past zero lash will damage them long term.

I put a small amount of silicone on the 4 corners to hold the gasket in place, makes life so much easier.
