Which Comp Cams lifters to buy?

A few years ago I heard about the CC 850's falling apart, I think I read they changed their design of the retainer, but I am not 100%.

I heard the 875 were better but louder. Then Tooky posted this and their was a link to a F-Body page about all kind of retainer failures.

I am just confused, I have searched and can find a definative answer. It makes my head spin. The cam will be probably be about .530 lift and I will be using Comp Cams Beehive springs.

850s are a stock style replacement from Comp. They use a wire retainer just like stock. The 875s are considered a step up since they use a metal "shim" as a retainer. I put 875s in everything and have yet to have a failure. Can't say that about 850s.

As long as you preload them correctly, you wont have a problem with the 850s or the 875s. The thing that was happening was people were putting little to zero lash on the 850s like you can with the 875s. Thing is the 875s have a postive locking clip and the 850s a simple wire retainer. The Positive locking clip allows .000-.004 valve lash without grenading. The theory on this lash is to prevent lifter pump up. This is also why they are noisy. They operate at the top of their travel all the time. They are both decent lifters and like I said, preload them correctly and you will never have a problem with either.
