Re: Advice on tune

Is the KR when the AFR hits 10.7? On my truck, if the AFR is much below 11, I see some misfire that shows up as "false" knock retard. The cure is to run a little leaner and make sure the spark plugs are in good condition and gap.

You have a pretty big boost spike when you hit it, which is where the knock occurs. I would try to get that under control.

Yes I noticed that. I've tried nearly everything to resolve that boost spike. With the back of the turbo opened up, 3" downpipe and Forge wastegate this has been the best it has been. I guess the next step is to install a boost controller. I have not backed the timing off yet, I will try that to see if that helps any.

Well Im getting nowhere with controlling this boost spike. Installed a Greddy boost controller that I bought used from a member here last year and its got a bad controller. Bought an AEM Tru Boost and installed it. Been messing with the settings and on the lowest DC I am still seeing a spike. Im guessing that I just need to run an external gate on this thing.

You need to mess with your wastegate crack pressure. If you have it set too high, you will get boost spikes.

Waller upgrade turbo which is afaik larger 57mm compressor wheel and ported wastegate, back of the turbo is opened, JSM style 3" downpipe, forge wastegate with the 14-16# spring, HKS BOV, high flow cat, turbo muffler.
Right now my settings for the TruBoost are 10 for the duty cycle which is the lowest, and 9 for the spring pressure. I boost to 16-17 and then it settles back to around 14. Im thinking maybe theres too much preload on the actuator and I need to back it off a bit.

Check the actuator and make sure it's set properly. Make it so it slips on the actuator puck easily and then screw it in 1 full turn (tighten it). With it set to 10 psi crack pressure, that sounds like it should work perfect.

Well this is how I originally setup my Forge. I took it off today and turned it out 1 full turn. There is zero preload on it now. I warmed it up and took it around the block. Im guessing I need to back the spring rate off further? Here is a log.

OK Played around with the AEM some more.

Spring pressure set to 7psi and 10%DC. Pulled fuel off the top.

Spring pressure at 6.5psi and 10%DC. Pulled more fuel off, down to -9.4%

I feel like Im getting closer with the wastegate setting as Im not seeing as much overboost as I was previously.

Just a thought, Have you tried the weaker spring (cant remember without looking - is it yellow, rather than the blue one?) that the Forge actuator came with, to see if that helps and allows you to set a bit of pre load?
I wouldn't have thought that running the gate with 0 pre-load is a good idea, as it could be chattering.

Bench testing my Forge unit with the Blue 15psi spring, it didn't operate until 'just' under 15psi. Obviously when fitted and operating in a running vehicle, there are other forces in action, that may affect this.

It crossed my mind to try this, however its a royal pain to get to my actuator with the battery relocate and airbox I have built. Im hoping I can get this setup to work and get it down the track for some times before I do heads and cam. I have plans to reconfigure the whole passenger side fender arrangement and add a 10cm hot side to the turbo.

Re: Advice on tune

Ok feels like Im getting close on the boost controller. Im at 5# on the spring. Pulled more fuel before I ran any of these logs and I can see that the truck no longer hits the bottom threshold.

Changed the spring pressure to 5.5# DC 20
https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=7B2B331058212480!322&authkey=!AH_1qTasZaw11eY&ithint=file%2cuni

Changed spring pressure to 5# DC 20 Pulled a few degrees of timing from 3/4 gear

Changed DC 30
https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=7B2B331058212480!321&authkey=!AG99CgLb0mIpLG8&ithint=file%2cuni

So at this point should I remove more timing or should I be running a bit richer? If anyone has any other input I would appreciate it.

There's no way to know for sure without trying it. Try it richer, then try less timing, and see what works better. If it still knocks, then you might have to reduce boost. You're running a little leaner at WOT than I normally do. I usually target around 10.8-11.0 AFR on pump gas.

Thanks Eric, I will give it a try. I was hoping to run more than stock boost with the mods I have.

Re: Advice on tune

Got a pretty good run in on Tuesday except the laptop kept disconnecting from the truck randomly at times. Think I finally got the gate controller settled in. I don't see much knock and I hit almost 19 psi at one point. Flickered the CEL the 3 times I got into boost on the way home after the truck sat for 3-4 hours. Didn't get a log since I had issues staying connected earlier. I think the fueling is pretty close now. Doesn't look like my IC is functioning too well as my IAT rise but don't come down very fast? Going to check the pump and possibly get a scoop.

Changed AFR to 11.0 Spring pressure 4# DC 45
