Weather looks good here today ive made some transmission shift point adjustments and added 4 degrees of timing. Back to the track tonight to run some test and tune. Hopfully some 10s.

You should seriously think about haveing Harry Anderson at least finish the base tuneup before you keep pushing it like your doing on a base tuneup which wasnt meant for the track and possibly hurting something.

Makes no sense to go out and beat on it when it isnt really ready.

good luck

WTF?? Ed Hess telling someone else NOT to beat on something. I think I just saw a pig fly by my 2nd story window.

Dont worry Ed if i blow it up Im building a stroker motor and coming for you!! Im not totaly stupid when it comes to tuning either. Ive built many import cars making upwards of 700hp. 4 banger stuff mostly. I wasnt real comfortable with the big stuff system at first because iv never used it before but now that ive been using it its alot simpler. The navigation trew the maps is just alot different. Harrys tune was only good for 11.40s ive since changed most of his settings to get it to 10.90s. I still need to have him look over my tune and loggs to see if he can squeeze out any more power than me. His base map was a huge help to get started with it would of taken me weeks to get it to that point he does now his stuff with stand- alones. He wants to hook up when its cooler out to try and better the tune. No worries!!! Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Re: Auto Addictions going Atco tonight!!!

STROKER MOTOR!!!

what the heck do you need that for? :)

I dont have a stroker motor or big cubes. simple 3.48 stroke and .030 bore.

Probly the same size as you!

maybe you got me confused with robert or or matt hoovers old truck. :)

all I'm saying is make your changes slowely and use your head about it.

maybe add 1-2 degrees, if it likes it add again. But dont go in big 4 degree jumps and take a chance on hurting it.

have fun tonite and stay safe. :)

Frank. I read the thread over again....Ed's skeered. He wants Harry to see what you've got so he can see what he's up against.

Well Frank,

My 1st thought is that you need to get rid of that damn intercooler with 140 degree & higher Air Temps if you gonna make more power. Cooler the air no matter how high the octane level C16 still won't help that high of the air temps. My intercooler doesn't run over 110 and thats sitting in traffic or track. Saturday night the air temps were 70 degrees.

I got 11.44 @ 119 on 17-18 lbs of boost with 93 octane.

If i remember you are running race gas now. With the new rear suspension changes i should get some 1.6 or 1.5 60 fts @ E-town Weds Night.

Well Good luck and look forward to seeing the results!

Re: Auto Addictions going Atco tonight!!!

Well i just got home from atco and i didnt manage to run any 10s. How ever tonight really wasnt about gunning for the best et. Ive been playing aroud with all the tranny settings and lock up on the converter. I think ive finaly figured out the Big Stuff trans controler. I did run a 11.00 125.90 with a not so good 1.668 60 ft. My best pass was 10.90@126 on 103 oct. gas 11.9 afrs. Now the 11.00 tonight was on c16 with10.6 afrs. Clearly it needs to be leaned out more for better numbers. I did learn tonight that theshe pulls alot harder up top with the converter lockin up in third gear. On the 10.90 pass there was no lock up at all.
As soon as the converter locks up it pulls hard as hell now i need to l speed up the locking of the converter earler in 3rd. It locking up at 5700 rpm in third then drops my rpm to 4800 when locked. This is killing my et. So im going to try to set it to lock up as soon as it shifts into 3rd. The dam track is so packed i only get 2 runs this isnt the best way to tune its taking forever. I need some drag radials too mabye friday night. The good news is im beating the stank of of it and driving it to and from the track it runs great. The 4l80e is taking a woopin thus far. Ill post a video later

Good job Frank. Not a new best but you are dialing it in closer to what you want and thankfully no problems.

Re: Auto Addictions going Atco tonight!!!

What kind of converter is it? (Manufacturer/model) What stall rating? 1000 RPM dropped on lockup sounds to me like it's really loose up top!!

Re: Auto Addictions going Atco tonight!!!

Frank is making a lot more power. It stalls at 3400 rpm. You change boost and start pushing bigger numbers and the stall will go up. That's how converters work. When you lock it up, there is zero slip. So depending on how you make it shift is gonna determine when you lock it up. For example, if you lock it up in 3rd, run the rpms up until you start to loose power that way and adjust as needed.
If you are NOT locking it up, your gonna have to shift it at a different rpm because you COMPLETELY changed the load situation. Turbo motors LOVE the load created by lockup. NA motors bog on load. Different creature.
Does that make sense? You can't shift it at the same rpm both locked and unlocked because you have completely changed the load that you are putting on the engine/turbo.
Actually, the rpm drop is the sign of an efficient converter. If you get hardly NO drop on shift, your converter is VERY inefficient or the trans is severely slipping.
Frank make sure you keep you duty cycles set up in a manner that your pressures stay up during WOT. You want a MINIMUM line pressure of 165 PSI at WOT. 175 is even better but a MINIMUM of 165 psi.

Re: Auto Addictions going Atco tonight!!!

Here's some info I had that may help explain why it behaves different during launch vs high rpm when you start tuning and making more power.

Labeling a converter as having a specific stall without reference to the motor it is behind is misleading and naive. That stock converter, which stalls at ~1,500rpm behind a stock motor, might stall at 3,000rpm or more behind a blown big block, if it didn't blow up first! To elaborate a bit: stall speed is not just a function of the converter. It is also a function of engine torque. This can be relatively easily described by defining the "K" factor. K is simply the constant in the equation K = rpm/sqrt{torque}. The equation describes the observed behavior of the converter behind a specific engine. What this allows us to do is determine what the stall speed of a given converter will be if we put it behind a different engine.

For example, if a motor has 400 ft-lbs. of torque and stalls a particular converter at 3,000rpm, K = 3,000/sqrt{400} = 150. Since we know K = 150, we can predict the new stall speed if torque is increased to say 500 ft-lbs by rearranging the equation to rpm = K*sqrt{torque}. In this case, the new stall would be rpm = 150*sqrt{500} = 3350. This formula isn't perfect. It won't work if the engines have wildly different torque curve, for example. And it won't tell if a particular converter will hold together under markedly increased torque. But it gives a decent ballpark estimate and serves to illustrate a basic aspect of torque converter function.
For most street and street/strip, you probably want a stall in the 2,500-3,500rpm range. But do not buy an off the shelf converter thinking it will give you the advertised stall unless it has been proven to do so on an identical setup. Speak to the manufacturer first to be sure you are getting what you need for your particular combo.
