Hi all. I am getting a code 42 and I am not sure how to fix this problem? What should I look for or replace? Thanks!

Re: Code 42??? How do I fix?

42 can be caused by the set timing connector (under the dash on RH side above passenger's foot) being disconnected to set timing, or just being intermittent.

If you've recently set the timing, clear the code, and see if it comes back.

I have not messed with the timing, but recently had to replace the heater core. Maybe it accidently got disconnected when I was doing that? What does this connector look like and is there a wire color that I can trace to the connector? Thanks again.

Bingo! This is probably it, then.

Tan with a blk stripe. Single wire connector. Right above the top edge of the carpet. Breaks out of the main harness about 3" from where it goes into the engine compartment.

Make sure it's reconnected, and clear the code by removing ECM fuses. (its the one on the right of the pair).

Yep:

"The ESC Electronic Spark Timing "tan wire with a black stripe" that everyone can't find when attempting to set their timing (s-series). Wire is under the carpet on the passenger side below the heater box. It is disconnected to set the timing, then reconnected."

I found it and it is connected. Damn, I was hopeing it would be that easy!!! So, what else should I look for??? The truck runs fine, I just can't clear the "check engine" light. Thanks.

why dont you just clear it and see if it comes back. did you maybe have the key on engine off while that connector was unplugged? or maybe just a burp in the system.

Ditto...clear it and see if it comes back. Like DaveP said pull the fuse or disconnect the battery to clear the ECM. Let us know what happens.

Re: Code 42??? How do I fix?

I tried clearing the code with no success. Now, 2 days later, the "check engine" light turned off. The truck still runs fine so I am not sure what the problem was or if it will come back. Thanks again to all for helping out. I hope it just fixed itself and I don't have to "F" with anything. The only trouble I still have is my 4000E diagnostics module still says that it cannot read from the ALDL. I will try hooking up my Datamaster and see if it will read.
