first time at track ever

i got to take my new phoon to the track tonight. was my first time running on a track. with a dead intercooler pump and no front driveshaft i was able to run a 14.5 at 90mph in the 1/4. i think i could have gotten a 14.3 or maybe better but i let it shift third too early. still it was one of the best evenings i'd had in a long time. and for cheap. but i won't be going back until i atleast have a working intercooler pump and hopefully a new front drive shaft

Do you have a scan tool? Do you have tach flutter? 90 mph is slow for a Ty, it should atleasy 96mph.

MPH might be down because the T-case is trying to figure out what to do with about 35 % of the torque that is supposed to be going to the front wheels. Unless the trans is junk let it shift itself, it sounds like it's bogging but these aren't high rpm motors.

Get a scan tool and all the stock parts working and tuned and see some 13.5's before putting the mods on.

Going to the track is a great time, and there is always something cool (or funny) to look at. I'm very lucky my wife likes to go so it's more fun and cheaper than dinner and a movie for me.

Re: first time at track ever

for some reason when i shift it out manually it seems to run faster. i was only shifting around 5000 rpm. and when i bumped it into second and accidently when to third it basicly skipped second. transmission seems okay but i think part of it is my front drive shaft is missing. and i might need a new fuel filter. i got one sitting in the truck so i needa put that in.

I dont see how it would "skip second", given that its still an automatic transmission, it would still shift to 2nd, then 3rd. Granted there may be an exception to every rule, but I know from past experience and past readings on this forum that manually shifting the auto trans, ESPECIALLY out of 1st gear not only hurts performance but consistancy.

I could understand launching in 2nd to carry out the 2-3 shift, but to shift that 1-2 about 1 second after you launch...........no thanks. Id rather just have the trans built/performing right and let it do it itself.

well i'm still learning how to handle this truck. i know when i let it shift by it self it seemed to be shifting early. i ran a 14.8 when i just stuck it in drive. as for skipping second it didn't actually skip it it shifted second and then shifted third almost right away. but it was kinda kewl running and being the only one at the track that still had my daughter's carseat in the back.

Re: first time at track ever

When I bought my truck it had a dead IC pump. It ran 14.1 @ 92.
Fixed the IC pump and took out the front drive shaft and ran 14.7 @ 96.
Replaced the front drive shaft and ran 13.6 @ 98.
The driveshaft will kill your ET and the IC pump will kill your trap speed. When you get those fixed you are looking at mid to high 13s.

Morgan – you have to remember he has no front drive shaft, most of the extra time in his ET is in first gear, so that would make it a lot easier to manually shift 1-2. He might even have to let off enough to keep traction that it shifts early.

NecroWolf – you will be amazed at what these trucks feel like off the line once you get a front drive shaft in and launch it.

Edit
I would not have raced my truck with a dead IC pump had I known it at the time, you need to get that fixed or get a scantool to make sure you don't have too much KR before you race anymore.

I didn't see the no front driveshaft. 5000rpm is too high, 4500 rpm at the most. Some truck shift as low as 4000 1-2 and 4200/4300 2-3 and still run great times.

yeah it was pretty awesome when i got to launch my truck with the front drive shaft. i think that was how i killed the cv joint on it.
