First time out with the Syclone

Well, I made it to the dragstrip tonight with the Syclone to try and get a good baseline before I really start to mod it. After replacing a bad fuel pump, it's running much better. I am still fighting massive amounts of false knock, but I thought I'd see how it will do without any iginition advance (I get upwards of 12-14? retard thanks to my stupid knock sensor).

I was hoping for mid to low 14's but was suprised with the results (best pass shown below):

60' --------------- 1.850
330' ------------- 5.507
1/8 -------------- 8.668
1/8 MPH ----- 77.63
1000 -----------11.336
1/4 -------------13.749
1/4 MPH ------96.18

All runs were at 15psi with a manual boost controller (Grainger valves rule). This was launching at maybe 2-3psi, if any (I'll have to check the DM file). I never got the chance to do the neutral revs to better lock the brakes due to every friggin' guy in the other lane staging before me.

I had one 14.0 pass (2.0 second 60'). The rest (5 of them) were all high 13's. The last two were 13.7's. I think once I get my timing straightened out, I can pick up a couple of tenths.

What do you guys think? Is this typical? Should I be concerned about any of these numbers (i.e. does my 60' suck)?

Considering your mediocre 60's, it looks like a pretty decent time to me. With a harder launch you should be able to pull 1.7x's, maybe 1.6x 60's.

Try a 5-7# launch next time out. If you're running time trials - don't worry about the other guy staging first. Just roll up to the line, do the neutral rev, stick it back in gear, build the boost, and leave when YOU'RE ready.

Time Trials = Who cares about your reaction time?? Run your own race.

What was the weather like (temp, humidity, etc.)?

As for the false knock, make sure it isn't real by putting some good gas in the truck. A 50/50 mix of race gas should tell you pretty quickly if its really or not (your knock retard will down 3-5 degrees) Ofcourse I am still dealing with the Knock retard issue...

If the tire hook up decently and the track is adequately prepped, a reasonable stock syclone can do 1.7 60's.

Re: First time out with the Syclone

I ran 13.50's @ 100ish one night in my syclone with terrible ~2.20 short times all night long a couple of years ago...I later came to find out that engine had l35 rods, heavy trw .020 2441's (I think), 20g turbo with the "too big" exhaust side, ported and larger valved stock lb4 heads, a ~2000 syty converter, and stock injectors .....could build only a max .5 lb. (half of one psi) boost at the line....all basic mods done....one of the only times in my life I have 'driven' a car/truck down a track.....MPH in a quarter mile mean more to me than anything in drag racing.....and street racing is fun once in a while....only take down the guys that challenge you!!!

Re: First time out with the Syclone

Dave, I'm pretty sure it's false knock. I data logged it once with 5 gallons 100 octane and half a can of Torco and I still got the same amount of knock.

So to get 1.7's, will I absolutely need to do the neutral rev trick. If I try and just brake boost it without, my rear tires start spinning (like power braking a rear wheel drive car) before I make an appreciable amount of boost.

Thanks again for the input.
