octane testing

hello.

i installed new injectors on my truck, and a new turbo. the truck has been standing still for 2.5 yrs or so.
now i took the ty out for a spin, and it just isn't what it used to be, i was laizy and haven't run DM yet, because i have the feeling the feul has gone bad.

is there an easy way to check for that? it's 3/4 full. and it would suck to drain it all.

this truck used to be scary fast, with a pt 61 and 50's on a bad tune on 12psi.
now it has the same build as my Sy, and pt67dbb 65's injectors. .and it makes 12psi. but just doesn't pull hard. the WB02 reads good. but i even get lean back fires getting of the throttle.

so, before i do anything. is there a way to test thee octane??
Thanks!

If the gas is 2.5 years old, you need to get it out of there, change the fuel filter, and maybe run some seafoam or other cleaner through it... you've probably got varnish deposits inside the tank/fuel system.... use the old gas in your lawn mower :D

The old gas leaves a varnish on everything (injectors, lines, tank) as it ages. It would not hurt to run a cleaner through it. I like Techron. THEN change the filter.

Re: octane testing

I didn't have any problems with my truck after it sat for almost three years with a full tank of gas. Filled it up since I had heard that if you are gong to store a car for awhile fill it up to keep condensation in the tank at a minimum. I didn't add an stabilizers or additives to it either. It drove fine but I stayed out of boost until all the old gas was ran out. Not an easy thing to do after waiting that long to drive it again.

I think that's truly the key Mike... keeping it filled all the way up to the filler neck. I recently helped a buddy restore an Audi Quattro that had been sitting with a half full tank for 3 years... god what a mess!

Re: octane testing

that's why i filled it when i parked it away, but after that i washed it a feul time, did some other things, let it run once in a while.
just wondering if i should just drive the tank epmty or throw it away, driving normal it ain't that bad.
just a PITA to throw 3/4 of the tank away. like $100

Re: octane testing

American gas can be different than your gas too. your gas is probably way better. i would drain it if it was american gas but its up to you. i had 1 year old gas in a truck that i had drained. i smelled it, and it didn't even smell like gas anymore. More like paint thinner. i used it to start my campfires and it didn't even flash up like it was gas, more like Diesel.

I have heard that the county i live in has degradation additives to make it go bad sooner. don't know why but even after a month in my county gas is not what it once was.

As expensive as these motors are, i would drain it , put it in cans, and throw it in a daily driver that could not care about quality of gas.

Re: octane testing

I wouldn't use Stabil for long term storage after what I saw at school. The gas was fffuuuuuunnnnnkkkkkkkkyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Over the winter might not be that bad. We had to buy a new fuel pump for the Chrysler 300 Hemi b/c of Stabil. Can't recall what other probs it caused, but it wasn't nothin nice.

I'd drain the gas and use it in the lawnmower.

Re: octane testing

I drained my Sy tanks after sitting for almost years. I put the gas from my Sy in my two Daily Drivers. Years ago I had the same problem with 3 year old gas my Corvette, it took a me three more year to run it through my lawn mower. The last year in my lawn mower, I had use to starter fluid in the carb to get it started up.

The easiest way to get it out would be with your fuel pump (provided that you don't mind using it to pump the old gas out). Remove the core on your fuel rail and connect the appropriate hose to the fitting and jumper the fuel pump test connector:

"Applying 12 volts to fuel pump test connector to troubleshoot fuel pump or set fuel pressure with vacuum line still connected and motor off (note fuse for safety)."

Just be mindful of static electricity if you do it. You will be surprised how quickly it will empty the tank...

Re: octane testing

jump thanks for the tip, i actually did it that way, and just reading your post. i took the feulfilter of and ran a garden hose to a car of a friend of mine, he was almost out of gas, so he's happy, and my problem is solved.

there was actually another issue, the kickdown cable was broken as well, wich made it also laggy as shit,

while on the lift i also removed the muffler delete pipe, and put the muffler back in,

still needs a bit of tuning under wot...
i wasn't planning of driving the ty yet, but the ty is better fot my back than the sy..
inspection on monday, so hopfully roadlegal by monday,

Re: octane testing

So you do listen to me sometimes :)

Shame my POS wasn't there - you could have poured gas all over it and set fire to it :)

Hope you get it up and running soon!

Re: octane testing

I still have gas in my truck that is 2 years old. The truck runs great on it though for some reason. I hit 12-15lbs boost and it doesnt miss a beat. Starts up great too.

I like the tip on the last page to empty the tank though, thats priceless info if you dont want to syphon it all out!!! ---

Re: octane testing

amaing yours runs on it. low throttle and starting was all good. but in boost it was a pig, i could make boost, but feels like the thottle body was closed.
also when i swapped turbo's i forgot to hook up the ext. wastegate,. and hitted 20psi. luckely i had my boost on the gauge and let of real quick, after that i did some 10 psi runs, and it just was a pig.

all is good now. and drives like a charm with the new dbb turbo!!!
