a hollinger sequential tranny would be nice too :)

Jack, check out the video posted of hoovers truck from the nats.. You can tell its spinning a bit, although that launch was at 8psi. His 12psi launch had white smoke coming off the tires. MPH didnt change a whole lot. So I can tell you it definately spins for alittle bit. We're gonna get it sorted out. Last minute he decided to buy a multistage boost controller but we figured out in KC his wastegate spring is way too high. So as soon as I get him some new lower springs, he will be able to dial in his launch much better and keep it from spinning.

Hoovers also bought the PEP front suspension, which is definately not set up the way it should be so they need to tweak with it as well. it actually slowed the 60fts down. The weather conditions and track prep at KCIR didnt help much either.

Its crazy how close all these trucks are to the 9s. Those .2 will prove to be some of the hardest .2ths they have ever had to shave off.

Also FYI, The "stock appearing" rearend i'm sure has some internal mods :)

boy you can say that again mike!!!!!!!!!

anyone of you guy talking about the 9's should look and "listen" to that video clip of Dr. Hoover syclone. that thing is really putting out some horsepower and sounds fantastic. and he most assuredly IS spinning the tires for quite a distance. and I heard he just bought new drag radials and that they were very helpful. keep something in mind. llast year at the syty nationals I seem to remember reading he ran 10.58 or something. that means he's knocked off like 4 tenths. thats a fantastic jump. does anyone know what they did to get that improvement? are they running a transbrake? if so, maybe all they have to do is go with slicks so they can launch harder to reach down a little deeper into the clock. I would worry about the stock rearend though. James, if you're watchin all these people talkin bout your truck, I would really reccomend the mark williams pro 12 bolt I have. it seems fantastic and I bet it would work great for you too. If you ever want to see what one looksw like under a syclone call me and I will be glad to send you some pictures.

we knocked off 5 tenths with tuning and heads. can still go with a little bigger turbo, but until we get everything out of our present setup we're gonna stay with the 72. 10.3 with no knock at all, rich a/f ratios, and high numbers for btdc retard all indicate there is still something left.

the price of parts gets pretty expensive tryin to go faster and just like anone else, ya start really tearing the crap of of stuff tryin. by the way, whoever took that video it came out great and ya did a really good job.

Les, you are right about parts being big coin, I got my 76gt bb from mike and it was like 2300.00, when the non bb 72 was 1100.00, so i hope it was worth the investment, i have not even tried my truck out yet with a dualbb76 turbo, mike lees custom downpipe, 3.5inch exhaust going thru a xr-1 race muffler now and exiting in front of the tire so its a short distance and it sounds roudy, also have the multistage boost controller, als front suspension, which i wish i bought the pep now, but that was not ready at the time, went to a 58mm throttle body, msd 7al, the flame was going out at 21lbs before, hopefully not now, also have the wilwoods at all fours, i have taken alot of wieght off this truck, also running the pro-gate now from mike lee and even went with the 18lb hawker energy battery, every lb counts, not that this a big deal but when i took the top intake off last time I forgot to trim the gaskets as jerry had the upper and lower ported so when i looked down in the gasket was hanging over the ports about a 1/8 inch, not a big deal but every little restriction helps, so I am dying to hit the track but it is just to hot here, Ill wait till nov/dec and try my luck and my hartman tranny, going to give it some hard launches.

Mike, you are right, I did watch the video and the truck is spinning for sure, but the mph is 135.? which is awesome but, Les, havent you gone 137mph?

I just think the truck is def. capable of a 9, there is no doubt, but if he was spinning that far and making gobs of hp you would think his mph would be higher, I know we are driving bricks but anyway, I did see some spin there, look liked it spun a little bit on the -2 shift also.

If it were my truck I would have already had et drags out back and et streets in the front, that thing would hook then, I mean come on, drag radials, key word here (radials), yes they hook up fairly well on the street and the track, but if your going for a record, put some sticky tires on and call it a day.
I know, I know, you guys are saying he wants to run a 9 with drag radials, which is very cool also, but myself, I could not wait for that slip and would have bolted up the et drag slicks, hell, just out back would probably be enuff to get the job done.

One thing is for sure, he has probably had his truck live longer , tranny wise and rear end by those tires spinning, we all know if it hooks so hard and there is no wheelspin something has got to give, so maybe its a good thing how hes doing it.

Good luck, that 9 will be there soon enough, for all 3 of you guys, I cant wait to see who does it first. Then someone will want a 8.99, which I have heard of skylines that have ran 8.99-9.01, that is truly amazing, wonder if they have to beef up there drivetrain?

You would think that lingenfelters sonoma would have the right motor to hit that number, if the drivetrain could hold up and they cranked up the boost, my god , that thing must be able to make 1200-1300hp with race gas and high boost, you think??

It sure is nice seeing all these syclones just about to go into the 9s awd, the syty racing is FUN.

Matt said he didn't lock the TC on that pass. He said he was too busy steering, or something to that effect.

All 3 of these trucks are running high nines with the addition of one thing.........a 4 Link rear suspension....keep boost and everything else the same....you guys are all getting some good sixty foots in as it is imagine running 1.40's consistently! Then start cranking on the boost and look out.

I dont think a 4 link is going to do much for a radial tire. and who is going consistant 1.40 60fts? :drinking:

we made 1 run at 136.something high so I rounded off. it was the fastest we ever went but that's what the slip said so we went with it. just got back from summit tonight and have an idea for more traction in a can!

got an email today from someone that took a video of us last weekend with it going sideways in two gears. can't wait till I get it.

What was happening with the PEP kit that slowed the 60 foot times and what tweeks are you talking about to fix the issue?

Very interested in hearing from you.

For me it was ~100lb weight loss so I guess I'm expecting too much. I have yet to launch good, my best sixty foot is 1.80 and it was a sissy ass launch with no boost and say 2500RPM, I know I can do better with some boost and little more RPM. I guess I'm the only one running 1.40's (in my dreams at least  ) I think it would make them more consistent nonetheless and if I'm not mistaken Hoover has already run a few 1.4x somethings?? Anywho it will be interesting to see what happens.

OK guys...lets have a little vote. for a high horsepower awd like mine if you didn't want to go the 4L80E which would you do.

350 with a manual body and a transbrake or an auto and then you keep doing the powerbrake thing

400 with the same options

big buck 700/4L60/or 4L60E

how much work is it actually to convert over to a 350 or 400. I heard the 400 is actually more work. is the 400 and the 4L80 the same amout of work and modifications. they're the same size aren't they? what are the options for transfer cases if you do the 350 or 400 swap. I just happen to have a built 400 out of an 1100 horsepower gran national sittin in the garage that should be just as fast with all the stuff thats in it and I'm wondering if maybe I'm missin somethin not usin it. I don't really use mine for interstate drivin so maybe I wouldn't miss 4th gear. It would be fun not worrying about how hard you're beatin the tranny with the 400. the 4L80 sounds good, but it seems like it is just an immense amount of work and money

I dont have a bowtie block, but i have about everything else your truck does except for the 12 bolt rear , which is more wieght anyway, awesome rear Les, but i dont think it is needed in a sy, look at robert from sweeden and when was the last time you heard someone break a rear in a sy, it is always the tranny, my truck is alot lighter than yours i am guesing if you have ac and all, i lightened everything i could, and i am running the gt76dual bb turbo with the mccoy super motor build and a few of mike lees trick parts so , to the point, i might not be making as much power as you, i am going to run 25-27lbs of boost though so i dont know where that will put my power level and at 21lbs and a lot more tuning to go it went 11.0 at 128.89mph with a shitty 1.78 60ft, alot of upgrades have been done to the truck since this pass, that was a year ago, so anyway I am going to run some 25lb passes soon and i have a stage 5 hartman tranny and we will see how well it will hold up cause i am going to give it hell, so we will see how well a hartman tranny holds up.
These times were at moroso as well , shitty track, hate going there but it is close but for the next outing we will go to bradenton , the track with teeth as they call it, almost everybody runs 2-3 tenths faster there than moroso, they prep it very well and it hooks awesome, it is 100 miles away though, but it will be worth the drive.

I wish i could go today , but its not ready and its to hot anyway, but i will give that hartman tranny all it can handle soon and post results or broken parts.

hey 2730... whats your name? I don't know what to call you, 27 or 30 :D If i were you i wouldn't worry too much about your rear end. they do go once in a while if you have big power and traction and you launch hard but they're really nothin more than an s10 with positraction. I think and you can find em cheap usually. when you stqart gettin 60 footers in the 1.5's and low 6's you might want to play around with the springs and so forth. AI notices that dr. hoover and I have the same rancho suspension, all I know is that mine has a really soft ride and transfers weight at the line really well. if you ever want to change over and want to see what mine looks like there are some pictures on the board somewhere, or I can take some and send them to you. for what it's worth atr/mccoy have developed a new prop shaft that is supposed to be killer if you ever need one. I'm not even sure it's for sale yet. one hint i can give you if you don't have them is the fiberglass leaf springs seem to give a lot of squat and good weight transfer to the rear so you really dig in. I don't worry about the rear end but "always" worry about the tranny. the mark williams was in mine when I bought it. I'm thinking of putting the 400 I have in the sy and trying it and am wondering what all else I need to do that. I hear the transfer case for the 400 isn't all that strong. do you know who makes a better one.

My name is Jack Ostrander, you ever hear of the top fuel drag racer Jack Ostrander, well its not me, haha, but he is out there , he was a pro bowler or still is and used his bowling proceeds to race .

Les, I have every bolt on made for these trucks, i have the fiberglass springs and cal tracs, I went with a different posi unit and the heavy duty diff cover, mike lees custom dp, 3.5 exhaust, borla xr1 race muffler, i used to have the atr all the way back when i ran the 11.0 , now the 3.5 stops before the rear tire and with the borla xr1 it is loud and sounds alot better, i put the atr on my zr2 pickup.I have the wilwoods at all 4s, als front suspension, went to electric water pump, i have 2 fuel pumps and 8an line , speed pro, 75lb injectors, weld wheels, et steets, drag radials in the front, be cool rad., dual fans, no ac, no abs, multistage boost controller, alum. driveshaft, heavy duty front propshaft, custom motor tie down, battery in the bed, nos intercooler sprayer, 4 inch intake ducting from the turbo out the front headlight, the 11.0 pass was made with the 72 turbo, i have yet to try the dualbb gt76 turbo,dp, borla, electric water pump, wilwood brakes, als suspension, and a few other tricks, i have not even got to dial in the cal tracks, so i got alot of tuning to do and adjusting but it should be capable of running mid 10s, anything more than that would just be a bonus for me.
Good luck on any more of your runs.

I did not know jerry was a good buddy of yours, he knows me very well, never met him in person but alot of phone conversations, i love my mccoy motor, it is awesome, i changed the cam after i got it, went bigger and went with 1.6 roller rockers, it is the super motor with stage 3 heads and it has been awesome, i am running the speed pro computer, i did get the videos , thanks, talk at you later.

i dont know whats going to be best but a little prediction on the future here:

As more and more people running 11's and under, those going to the track weekly, increase then we are going to find out over time if a 700r with all the lastest mods will handle the syty torq.

if not then i think we will see many owners going to the 4l80e.

Given the number of "really fast weekly racers" being a smaller number right now, its just to soon to tell what is going to be the better of the 2 based on experience in our application.

Economically i hope the 700 turns out to be the answer.

but if not its a whole lot cheaper to just do a 4l80 once and forget about it than to do a couple 700's repeatedly.

repeatedly using 700's that fail is kinda like building a syty motor with a 412 cam, vortecs, bigger turbo and bigger injectors, and using stock rods cuz you wanted to save a few bucks.

again I hope the 700 will last but theres this little voice that keeps telling me to get ready for a a 4l80e.

My bet is 5 years from now we will all be using a 4l80 and mike lee will sell and stock the crossmember, front and rear shafts and transfer case adapter for it.

hi guys! i've been reading all the replies here and just wanted to comment on a few. the best 60ft our truck has had was a 1.51. it was at memphis leavin just under 10 lbs. i didnt get to finish the run bc it was the 1st pass we made after the coilover was put on. (bout hit the tree when it went directly right.) my dad and i both feel like the biggest problem at KC was the traction. we have never spun that bad racing our truck except on the street. BUT, spinning that bad at still getting at 10.16 excites us a great deal. on the 10.16 pass our 60 ft was 1.64. so we look forward to, as one preson said, the hardest 0.2 challenge. we feel good about our truck bc it's definately not the motor holding us back. the 10.16 was as good as the truck has felt to me in a long time. so maybe thursday when we go to memphis we can have a video for you guys.

our truck is completely streetable, but it has no overdrive. our lockup converter serves as 4th gear. true, we rarely drive it bc of the price of the C-16. we have put 93 oct in our truck when we were driving it a little but we havent gotten in it honestly bc we dont know what would happen, we've never been in the boost with pump gas b4??? another reason is the 4800 miles on the odometer. we like having a low mileage truck. i know a lot of you think whats the fun in having a 10 sec v6 thats driveable and not driving it, i guess that just the way we are?!? 4800 miles equal clean and nice. and yes the money invoved that was put in the truck also has reason to limit its street appearences  i run my Cobra up an down the street sprayin the heck out of it! call us crazy but i reckin that just the way we think!

guys, whoever breaks he 9 sec barrier, whether it be mr sweeden-robert, or les or mr green or any of the canadian syty team, or whoever, please put it on the internet so we can see it! i think thats just plain cool! mr robert, your truck is awsome, we, my dad and i, are both really impressed with it. its really smooth goin down the track. les your "rain" video is ridiculous! dang that truck gets wild! wouldnt want to be in it when u were filming! mr green and the canadian guys, saw ya'lls trucks on the internet and you have as good a chance as we do. run the hell out of em! if im forgetting anybody i dont mean to. my point is, dang this is fun and someone goin in the 9s is just going to make other people want to do it too which means more at the events, faster trucks, the whole nine yards. good luck and cya at the track!!! ::thumbsup::

Matt, you guys have never put slicks on that truck?

If that is so, then that is simply awesome, i understand about the breaking parts thing, but I think you guys would already have your 9sec pass with slicks on the rear.

Good luck, let us know when you guys run that 9, oh and how much boost have you had the motor up to?

we've never had a set of slicks anywhere simply bc we dont want to be breaking everything! dad had considered that a couple of days ago but we dont know for sure? we're going to play with it a little b4 winter sets in! our rear-end is completely stock, ring and pinion are what came from the factory. only heavy duty pinion support caps and the cover to keep everything from flexing. dad checked the rear end and axels just b4 we came and they both looked completely new! the axels werent twisted at all! we could not believe it! with slicks all that goes pop! the only reason it has held up this long is that we spin a little! normally we dont spin as much as we did at KC! we're going to see what it will do ET wise b4 we change the tires and rear end. at KC we were at 22 lbs of boost

race or get outta the way
couple questions about the gearing in the trans if you could help me out.

Are you using the 2.75 1st gear or the 2.48 1st gear in the thm400?

what stall in the tc?

What effect did changing to the thm400 and which ever gear set you have for 1st gear do to your 60ft and et times initially before you went on to other mods?

I desperately need to know the answers to these questions.

You can email or pm me privatley if you prefer.

Les young suggested i ask you these questions since you are the only one we know of using the thm400 with the oem transfer case.

This is the setup i am considering moving to immediately. How immediate, let just say the 700 came out of the truck this afternoon.

thanks
