Running Like Crap

My Typhoon was burning oil and i figured it was getting sucked into an intake runner because i had just resealed the lower intake due to it at the rear china wall. This time I resealed the lower intake with RTV around all the ports and used rtv on the bolts as well. The last time I didn't have RTV on the bolts. Now I feel like it is sealed up properly.

The first time I started it up I got a lot of soot blowing out of the exhaust which i figured was residual oil still in the system. After a couple times of running that has gotten better but is not completely gone.

I haven't driven it long enough to tell if it is still burning oil or not.

My A/F ratios are all out of whack. I am still not sure if I fouled out my wideband 02 sensor, my tune is why out of whack, or if i am still pulling oil through the engine and making the mix richer.

Sometimes when i first start the truck up it tends to run like crap, the engine will stumble and run lean. I would see spikes of 18-19 AFR. After a few minutes it will smooth out and it tends to run rich.

I can't get Datamaster connected so I had my wife record the wideband display while i provided commentary on a short trip to Wal-Mart which is about 2 miles away on city streets. It ran alright on the way to the store but on our return trip it ran like crap on the way out of the parking lot and died when I pulled over because it was running lean. Check out the 7:47 mark of the video for the return trip and where it ran really bad. The Exhaust Temp is not hooked up which is why it's all over the place. Enjoy my narration and Erin's camera work.

What should I do now? What sort of problems could i potentially be looking at if it is still losing oil? Engine blow by, bad turbo seal?:banghead:
As always thanks for any and all help.

Re: Running Like Crap

Im no expert, but the black soot is an indication of un-burnt fuel. My Rx7 did that and it was not burning oil, it was just extremely rich at idle. A good tune fixed that. Have you been checking your oil levels after each drive?

Watching your drive I see the truck run a little rich on idle/ deceleration and lean when you accelerate. I would say your tune needs to be fixed. Fuel taken out of idle and added to acceleration.

Re: Running Like Crap

I hooked up a fuel pressure gauge in the cab to make sure my fuel pump wasn't cutting out when the truck runs lean and I got data master to work. So I made another run around the neighborhood.

Truck ran rich but ok the first third of the trip. My fuel pressure was usually around 30 psi, never dropped below 28 and rose to 38 under throttle.
Then i shut it off for about a minute and fired it up. Then it started running lean again. Fuel pressure behaved the exact same way as before but the truck leaned out and stumbled. I then limped it home.
Please review the file and let me know if there is something other than the tune that i am missing. If it is the tune I will need to try something like the turbo tweak. Jim in Lawrence had been running a code 59 tune for me but I moved a considerable distance away from him and i wouldn't know what i am doing with code 59.
Thanks

Re: Running Like Crap

I took a good second look at the datamaster file when the ecm switches to Closed Loop operation is when it runs way out of whack. When it is in Open Loop it runs good just rich.
It seems to run in open loop when i first start the car and it stays in open loop until I shut it off. When I restart the truck it seems to go instantly into closed loop and it won't switch back to open loop. Even if i shut it off and restart it.

I am pretty sure I fowled up the o2 sensor when it was burning oil or it just went bad over time. With a bad 02 i will get false readings and it might be pulling fuel based on inaccurate information. Which I believe is why it runs poorly in closed loop. But fine in open loop when it isn't getting feedback from the o2 sensor.

Am I correct in this thinking?

Also what causes the ecm to change from open loop to closed?

I bought a new sensor a couple weeks ago because I thought this might have been the case but didn't have any sort of datalogger to support my hypothesis.

Re: Running Like Crap

I changed the o2 sensor today and it still does the same thing when it switches to closed loop. I have no idea what is triggering it to go into closed loop or what needs to be done to get it back to open loop. The conditions seem to be pretty consistent but the choice between closed vs open seems to be sporadic. The truck can not run in closed loop because it takes out too much fuel and in open loop it runs too rich. I don't know if this is all in the tune or if tuning would be working around other issues. When we tuned it, it was sound and I can't think of anything that has changed or why the tune would be so off all of a sudden.

Here is a screen shot of datamaster.

Also a picture of the old o2 sensor, it had a bunch of dry soot carbon deposits on it from it running so rich.

Any additional advice tips or tricks are certainly appreciated.

Thank you.

What turbo u running? I had this problem with my pt67dbb. It was missing a restrictor in the oilfeed line.

Mine does this too. Ive got it to the point that when I first start it up, it idles super smooth. As soon as it gets up to temp, the idle gets rough. I dont get that much black crap out the tailpipe any more, but I do get some.

Is this your bush?
Re: Running Like Crap

Mine also does the black stuff out the tail pipe on startup...I'd love to know why....and possibly stop it.
