Scored another 80e

I'm pretty sure that my current 80e has some pump noise so I've been looking for another. Found this one on CL.. Its supposed to be in good working order. The guy I bought it from claims that it was in a 3500 van that drove and shifted fine.. He wasn't sure of the mileage though.. I got this for $250.. I'll probably swap it in this winter just to try it and see if it works as claimed...

Its a 2wd unit so it has the nice long output shaft. Its also a 99 so it has the front/rear lube system with upgraded internals. Also it came with both TISS and TOSS sensors...

Do yourself a favor get a transgo HD2 shift kit. you can install it yourself. its pretty easy. These 80 e shift real soft and with the awd its worse.

I actually have a NIB HD2 shift kit... Did you install yours after the tranny was in the truck or before?

My preference would be to install the transmission, make sure it works, then install the HD2 kit..

I did it out of the truck but you can do it installed as well. It's all done in the valve body.

What year did they start doing this upgrade:

I've got an 80e out of a '98 2wd chevy van I was considering using.

This was posted by Blake many years back....

Older 4L80E's had an EXTREME overpressurization issue where it would
physically crack the case(excess of 600psi). Sonnax and Transgo HD2 kit's both
offer fixes to the issue.
If you get a 1999 or new core, you will get MANY improvements. Planetary
gearsets were widened by 10%, manual band was widened, there was input shaft
imrovements and a connecting shaft that had some holes deleted from it so the
lube system was updated as well. Stands out because you will have this little
short lube line going to the rear instead of the LONG lube line transversing
the whole transmission. Accumulators were updated as well as the wiring to
keep guys from bending the pins when installing them.
So try to get a 1999 core or newer(Its all in the ATSG). Remember, don't just
go to the junkyard and throw one in. That unit most likely came out of a truck
that weighed 4X what yours does and towed 5th wheels with 3 or 4 cars on them
with NO maintenance. It must be rebuilt and cleaned up.
One last thing to ponder, the 4L80E was used in passenger BUS applications as
well. If you don't think that will hold up forever in a syty app your smoking
crack.

So I do take some of his advice.. I try to find 99 or newer units.. As far as throwing them in without a rebuild.... why not..

EDIT: Just found this too in some of my old notes:

91-93 is early style. You don't want them.
94 to 96 is OK. Early lube system. Updated electronics and internal wiring harness along with case connector.
97-98 OK. New lube system.
99-00 Better. New lube system. Wide band.
2001- up Best. New lube system. Wide band. Wider planets. New overdrive arrangment.

Isn't there a hole you have to drill in a vein? Its been about 5 or 6 years since I did my Transgo HD2 kit but I remember that hole sucking ass and thought it was in the case side which I ended up doing with a dremel.

What's a 2wd 4l80 core from a 2000 silverado 2500 going for? I need to unload one.

Re: Scored another 80e

I wouldnt say they are better or worse, it just gives you more options and allows you to cut the end of the shaft off to give you the most spline engagement in the imput shaft. Most of the long spline shafts were in vans which in my opinion would not be pulling anything and therefore would probably have much lighter use than a truck!

Re: Scored another 80e

Is the 2wd better with the longer shafts than the 4x4?

Yep.. You get more engagement into the transfer case input shaft. I'm currently running a 4x4 80e and IIRC I only have like 1.25" of engagement.. That worries me since my truck is heavier than a real Ty and that 383 stroker makes gobs of torque.. The only saving grace is I'm running stock rims with stock size tires so I don't get enough traction to put a lot of stress on the driveline..
