Tune up scare

So I finished up the tune-up last night and dropped the Ty off the stands to take her for a short ride. She idled great! After the topend cleaner finished smoking off it was all good to go. I still have to install the Walbro so I didn't boost too much. So after about 10 miles of driving ........it starts to buck and sputter and dies. I was lucky enough to coast her off the road. I instantly thought it was the new afpr I installed. Did I set the pressure to low? To high? Is it leaking? Did I make a $14000 mistake by buying this turd...I mean Ty ;). I looked under the hood and no fuel leaks. WTF did I do!? Can I not even perform a simple tune-up on my Ty w/o screwing it up? I walked 2 miles to the gas station @9pm last night and called my friend to come get me. I was so pissed and quite scared something bad happened. My friend says, "Did you run out of gas?" It has a 1/4 tank....of course not. WRONG!!!!! I guess my gas gauge means E when it is on a 1/4.

The good news is that I didn't screw anything up. The bad news is that my gas gauge is a liar.

Re: Tune up scare

I once, wait I know a guy that tore apart a riding lawn mower because it wouldn't run. Removed the carb twice to clean what he thought was a clogged jet. Everytime it was put back on same thing.

Starting fluid would make it run so has to be a clogged jet. Or empty gas tank.

Been there done that. At least you were only 2 miles away, could have been worse.

Pretty typical with these trucks. If you want to pull the dash apart you can reset the needle... mine shows 3/4 when it's full.

Did Renz give you permission to crack short jokes at me? We've never met, there should be a rule.

:rotf: Too funny.

I've also ran out of gas, but my gauge was almost on E and I was on the way to the gas station.

That's not funny...

(The 3/4 thing, not the dead fuel pump)

Re: Tune up scare

All I can say is F_CK!!! The Ty is smoking like Cheech and Chong and blowing lines off the pcv valves?!?! I passed on a $9000 Ty and baught a $14500 Ty because this one had 35000 miles and looked great.......I am getting this f_cking truck towed to tunetime in NJ and hoping for the best. If it is bad news, I swear to god I will burn this truck and go back to turbo Suby's. I have had it with this nightmare of ownership.....and I haven't even had it 90 days. This was my dream truck since I was 20 yrs. old in 1992. Since owning it......I have not have 1 pleasurable moment of ownership. I should have listened to the advice on here and thought twice before purchasing this.

Sorry to be negative but I have found NO help locally with this(even though I have offered $$ and beer) and it seems this will always be a project no matter what; and honestly this Ty looks better than any I have ever seen in person or online. Always garaged, etc.,etc. I guess I am just very frustrated tonight and wish I would have kept my STi. :(

Wish me luck, if you will, and I will update this thread as to what is told to me from the shop in NJ. They seem to project the worst and if so, the Ty will be at the bottom of the Hudson.

Re: Tune up scare

I've been right where you are now. If you search hard enough you will find 2 for sale ads I posted in complete frustration that would have been giving the truck away at quite a loss.

Step away from it for a day. A week if need be. Then go back at it rationally.

There is a reason you will always hear about a love/hate relationship with these things. You will have to learn this truck yourself because you won't find many mechanics who know what a Ty is let alone how to work on one.

Where are you located anyway?

Where in NJ are you located? There's a bunch of us nearby. Give us some info on you and your truck - we might be able to help.

Re: Tune up scare

Whew, I had a couple of Sam Adams Octoberfest's and feel a little better now. Although the Ty is definately down. I suspect compression/ring problem. It has crazy cylinder head pressure that blows the 2 pcv's out of their sockets. I did a full boost 0-80mph run(no boost launch) and when I stopped smoke starting pouring from the hood and through the vents . I have come to far now to stop I guess. I just got finished spending $1500 on tune-up parts + $14500 for the Ty <what a losing gambler says.

I just installed this week -

160 therm + coolant flush
afpr
int. pump + soft lines
inj., wires, rotor
walbro
short intake
rear battery
cat-back

I also have datalogger and a new burned chip from Nolan/RPM Mike not installed. I am "preparing" myself for the fact I will probably be doing a piston swap or just getting a shortblock. The guy at Tunetime said it could be an intake manifold gasket or head gasket failure. My oil looks great though? No metal particles or h2o.

Man, you guys aren't lying. I have not been that mad in a long time. I can't wait until this jimmy makes me happy to fill it's part of the love/hate equation.

Re: Tune up scare

does it have the correct PCV valves in it? non boosted ones will pop out of the valve covers (thats been there done that talking)

Re: Tune up scare

Hopefully the tow truck will come today for the Ty. I don't feel comfortable driving it to NJ just incase. I feel brain dead from doing a tune-up all week after work. Thanks for all the advice from this board. I will definately update this thread with the final word from tunetime in NJ.

Known problems include -

Check Engine light doesn't work
Idle is high 1300rpm
Smokes like mad from the cylinder head ports, especially after a boost run

I really feel I will need a piston or 2. What would you guys do if you had a bad piston(s)? Buy a shortblock or drop pistons in this one? In other words what would you expect the price to be for both options? I hope it's not as serious but I am that guy that holds all the bad luck in his pocket.

Hopefully it will be something like a wrong pcv valve(s)! <crosses fingers>

Re: Tune up scare

+1 what pancakes said about the correct PCV. Easy check and fix. And pleassseeeee quit wth the "boost runs" until you correct the issue(s). If the motor isn't hurt, it will be! these motors are not like a NA motor where you can take your frustrations out on it. Well, you can, but it only makes it worse.;)

Re: Tune up scare

:( #1 & #5 pistons had low compression. I assume a cracked ringland(s). It looks like we will do a rebuild. I was told 2 weeks. Hopefully the block looks good. Keep you updated......
