OBX turbos

I had purchased a 25g OBX turbo off of Ebay. I was warned by members on here about this turbo. I did a lot of research on this turbo. It seems no one has really even used this turbo yet in the car community to give opinions on it. I read some good and some bad. What made up my mind is when I tried removing the C clip on the turbo to clock the compressor the snap ring broke every easily. If it was made out of true quality spring steel it should never break.
I then took the turbo to a reputable shop that rebuilds turbos (Rochester Fuel Injection). They said the wrong clip was used for the compressor and it was like it was hammered in to make it fit. Then he showed me the inside of the compressor housing. There we buggers in the casting. He said he better grind them down or they could come loose under heat situations. I told him to forget it. That was it for me. This was enough for me to call the company up and asked for a refund. They agreed to it even though it was not normal procedure to do this.
To me this is a red flag and I will NEVER put that product on my vehicle.
I like to take the road less traveled and this is what I found for anyone that wants a reference on OBX turbos.

Re: OBX turbos

i remember when obx jumped on the ebay scene back in like 1999 or so. They had some crappy generic, but cheap, strut brace bars for hondas. Apparently they sold enough of those to start copying other nice products to produce crappy products.

I had no idea they'd been around since 88. Wonder what crap they made back then?

Why ask if you aren't going to listen? What I would have done is also checked his feedback and see what people said about it. Glad you didn't get screwed.

I did listen. I took what Renz said and got serious about asking Rochester Fuel injection what they thought about it. I could have said "F it" and just bolted it on.

What do you think about having rochester fuel injection checking everything and doing it right? He said like $250 for a rebuild and ballance.

Their "About us" page has enough spelling & grammatical errors on it to scare me away.

Re: OBX turbos

just about any car forum will have horror stories of people using shit from these guys and in the end paying more then what it was worth.. glad that fate was on your side there man because if that snap ring had not broken that motor prob would be a boat anchor in a few months

Re: OBX turbos

This is precisely how these outfits operate. They send you crap they know will blow up, then after you put on a vehicle, they blame debris in your system for blowing it up.

Good thing you checked it before bolting it on.

Re: OBX turbos

I dont have my stock core anymore. I would consider that if I did. Just looking for a reputable mitsubishi turbo dealer. I want the 25g. I will try it on the stock stall first. I have 50# injectors on the way. 25psi in a 25g with alky and 50# injectors is going make my tranny turn into dust anyways.

Re: OBX turbos

Ok well Im going with it. The wife gave me the green light. Toyota supra guys seem to be using this turbo also. I think they call it the T67. From what I have found it apears to be the same thing. 4.3L has more displacment than a 2jz. Should spool nice.
