What ever it takes!!
The cam on the left is a custom grind. The other is a stock ty cam.
What is that extra lobe at the top for???

Good call dig, that's exactly what it is for. There is a cam lobe for a mech fuel pump, the lobe pushes a rod that "pumps" the mechanical pump in relation to RPM. Very common earlier small block GMs.

Wow! This thread makes me feel old. Younger guys wondering what things are that older guys used to see all the time. But the days of carbed engines are gone and younger guys would not know or need to know some of these things, because they are no longer needed. Some of you guys would be supprised that most cars with carbs ran with only 5 to 7 lbs of fuel pressure.

As low-tech as they are, mechanical pumps flow like hell! The line came loose above the valve cover on my '81 Chevy, and I could see (in horror) the fuel shoot out the open line (the hood was up).

Here's a question to go along with this. Does Comp (or whoever you get to do a custom one for you.) offer a cam without this?

Because my custom one has it as well.. Not like it really matters I suppose unless your running a carbed bowtie.

Most cams start as a normal blank, they are then ground to the customers specs. So depending on what your cam started as, it didn't end up as it was intended.

Unless you are concerned about rotational weight. Sometimes you need to go the extra mile to get an edge. Have even gun drilled a cam to lighten it up.
