duramax

i have been playing arond with this thought for about 4 years.
the aspen blue ty is off, since the guy i bought it from brought his non working tranny to a shop, if it got to expensive i could pick the ty up. i'm not that kinda guy. a ****ing deal is a ****ing deal period. i don't want that pos truck anymore.

so now i cleaned my broken engine syclone, and did some dissasambling on it to do something.. either wicked or just a frame off.

the duramax idea got me thinking 4 yrs ago.. that it would be verry coool to do. so..
how much do these things cost? you can get 600hp out t it quite cheap. and that with the weight of these trucks and the torque it would be real fun.
i'm not scared of doing wicked stuff.

so..what does a duramax engine cost and the 4l80E would fit behind it? yes?

thanks

Re: duramax

you will have to strenghten the front end alot becasue durmaxes are very heavy motor. Also you will not be able to keep a 4l80e behind it making 600hp becasue you will be some where in the 1300 1400lb tq range unless you build one with billet input and output shafts and then it still may not last.

Depending on what year motor you want to use depends on some aspect of the motor you can go to dieselplace.com and see the differences between the motors.

I say if your gonna shoe horn a duramax in a syclone, you might as well use the 6 (or is it 7) speed allison trans behind it. If you can make a transfer case stand up behind that, I would love to see it run. I think that would be a blast.

Re: duramax

i thought about boxing the chassis and strenghten the shock towers and use coilovers with the torsionbars. and and extra bar near the front differentialfor more strength in the chassis

Re: duramax

the allison is a pig, and with alot of people running 9's with the 4l80e i think the 4l80E has wider gears and the fun factor is alot better with a 4l80e. we have a allison in our crewcab and just don't like the sports factor with it.

Re: duramax

do it!

it would be sick. i would have to say a duramax motor and trans is gonna be quite expensive. unless u got conections

Re: duramax

I'd bet you would pay 5k for a blown one. I think it would be realistic to have to buy a wrecked duramax truck and transplant it. There are A LOT of things you are going to need from the factory. So lets say you get a wrecked truck with motor, probably going to cost you 7-10k depending on damage and if thee is even a motor in it, at least you have everything you need and shouldn't need to hunt down too much. I wouldn't blow the Allison off, it may perform not so hot in your crew cab but in a vehicle half the weight, I bet its a different story. I have an 8.1 with the Allison and have few complaints. I noticed it does some strange things sometimes but hey, all my rides do ;).

Re: duramax

i too would just buy a wrecked truck. i can talk to my junk yard buddy and see what they go for at auction if you like. the big problem is over the pond, unless you guys have a bunch over there it would be expensive to ship.

if it isn't to bad to find out about it, i would like to know where the go for.
over the pond these are kinda expensive i would say, but shipping ain't that bad, about 1k for a wrecked one i would say.

Re: duramax

A cheap dirtymax is gunna run you 5-6k(that will have 90-120k miles on it and will need a rebuild in 15-30k) plus harness and fuels system and computer probably another 1-2k and a 4L80E behind a d-max would be like MR Syclone running a stock 700r4.You may get the clutches in the 80 to hold up but you will break every shaft in it.

Then an allison 5 or 6 speed they are basically the same externally and they are HUGE but a cheap on will probably run 1500-2500 (will also need a rebuild and some upgrades to hold 600hp/1000tq) and then the controller and harness $600-1000

Transfer case you would probably want to go with a manual 1-ton t-case ours may hold up for awhile.

I would worry more about the front and rear axle.

IMO the engine transmission is just to big(in size and weight) and something that is completely unsuported.

It would be completely awsome and if you did it right you would love it. 600hp would probably get 30mph and pur like a kitten(it might become your new DD)

I live in redneck diesel country so I see some crazy money spent on trucks

Re: duramax

i found a duramax with damage over here. the milage is quite hight about 180k miles. but than again if he is willing to sell it for around 5k or so, i got all the parts and stuff to try to swap it, and i can always rebuild stuff later.
are the older duramaxes alot weaker than the newer?

You can find motors around 4k and these duramaxes will run forever if simple mantaince is done one them. Gm says they need to be torn down at 250k for inspection but there are guys i know that have over 500k miles on these motors making 500rwhp and not a problem.

Like i said the allsion is going to be the one to be able to support that kinda of power. it is not the hp that you are worried about it is the torque that kills them.

something intresting you might want to look at (not the same as a syty sway but still was put in a regal (gn clone) www.18to1.com )

But the best place to go for information like i said before is www.dieselplace.com for information on duramaxes allisons and so forth. just like this site has tons and tons of info.

Also that milage it is just getting broken in look at above post.

what is your definition of weaker. They had less power from the factory but a simple tuner will make as much as you want. Actually alot of the big hp guys are using 01-04 lb7 motor becasue they seem to stand up better.

Re: duramax

I am sure if they are taken car of they will run 500k no problem. But buying used is the porblem.
I am actually in the process on putting on in right now. But the guy let it over heat and popped the heads.

We just ran into on that didnt start after a wreck and the camshaft was broken so becarfull and if you get it from a salvage to check and see if they have hear it run.

Re: duramax

must have been an lly motor 04.5 or 05 model? they were notorous for doing that becasue of the fan clutch they used. Most people will put a aftermarket intake and also electric fans on those models and they do just fine. A buddy of mine has a 05 that he tows a TH year round that wrights 18k lbs and when he swtiched over to the aftermarket intake and the electric fans the highest temp he has seen wasa little over 200*. when he first got it would over heat in just stop and go traffic with less than 10k miles on it.
