steering column at adjustment-joint loose (UPDATE)

howdie guys,

ok here's my problem :

the joint for steering-wheel adjustment seems loose (at the steering column) ... :rant:

... and i also recognized that, when i slightly force the little arm (called turnlight, i think) on the column, the whole plastic-cover-thing starts to shake (sorry for my bad english, but i tryed hard )

... is there a fix or anything i can try to get rid of that wobble (like weld s.th. up ...) ??

anyone else got this kinda problem before ??

Early 90's(I think) jeep steering shaft. That should take the play outof it...
Do a search (sorry I am out the door as I speak) there is some available here for $50-$60

I had the same problem on my Sy. It's not a hard fix. There are 4, if I remember correctly, bolts that are down in the steering column that worked they're way loose. Just take off the steering wheel and a few other things and tighten them up. Dealership wanted like 300 bucks to do it. I did it in less than an hour.

Oh geez....I had this happen to mine last year. Made for some strange effects when turning,lol.
Like mentioned above....you just have to begin pulling all the steering componets out of the column and pay attention how shit goes.
There will eventually be some 4 bolts way down there that have loosened up on you . Tighten them...but ONLY after you remove them and apply some LOCK-TITE !! :tup:
Mine has stayed like new since.

those bolts come loose from allowing the wheel to flop up upon releasing the tilt/pulling on the wheel to get in or out...super easy fix, just by taking off the wheel, then remove plastic cover and you will see the bolts...there are 4, if you do not tighten all 4 one will eventually back out and lock your steering wheel possibly while driving along (not good) 2 will fix loose issue, but all 4 must be tightened...like Vinnie said...use loc-tite. Some of the columns have an inverted torx or star type bolt. 1/4" 6 point socket should do the trick...always has in the past.

ok, what i did so far ...

removed locking plate :



removed turnsignal switch :



looks like :



AND : already had the plastic-cover off, but ...

... where are those "four bolts" ??

do i have to go deeper :roll:

I believe it is the flange where part #69 rests against the firewall but I haven't done mine yet so I will let someone else chime in.

If your whole column is moving then Jason is right but if it is just the tilt part then see below.

I really can't tell from the pics or schematic. It's been about 7 years since I did mine. All I can say is I started taking it apart and wiggling the tilt part of the steering till I could see the problem. I do remember that they are down there fairly close to where the column actually tilts. I had to use an extention to get to them. If you move the column around and look down in there you should be able to find them. I wish I could help you out more...

man, that's where i was already, but where are those fawkin' bolts ??

... can you please name 'em on the schematic ??

Bring up a post from the past. Part # 58 on the schematic is where the problem is. Now the Question. Is there a easy way to get to the top bolt on the driver side without pulling the pivot pins part # 6? The pivot pins do not want to come out on this column. I have done other's in the past with no problems. The other 3 bolts are really easy to get too.

Sorry to bring up an old post but, I am stuck at the pivot pins. I don't know how to get these out. Also, I am assuming I need to get them out to take the upper swivel housing (or whatever its called ) off so I can get to the bolts. I tried making a make shift slide hammer but it wouldn't pull the pin out. The pivot pins aren't threaded are they? Only thing I can think of now is to heat em up which probably wouldn't be a good idea.
