100mph and possible backfire

Is this your bush?
As the title states I hit 100-105mph and it seems to backfire and I've seen alittle ploom of smoke come out the back. Anyone have this happen? If so did you figure out what it was?

No chip stock, 20g, walboro, cai, Ebc, bov, plx ,spark plugs gapped at .030, I've always had this issue even if it was the stock turbo.

3rd gear or 4th?

Got a scanner/datamaster/tunerpro? Hook it up and record when it happens. Even though our trucks are limited to 126mph, I have seen some cut early. The other consideration is that you're hitting the rev limiter in 3rd (hence why I asked what gear above).

Aside from that, your ignition could be getting weak. 3rd and 4th gear put more load on the engine at a specific rpm/boost than 1st and 2nd, so while the issue might not occur at high rpms in lower gears, it could show itself in the higher gears.

Re: 100mph and possible backfire

Just did plugs, cap rotor etc , it gets it at 6k usually. I'll have to hook it up and record and post it I think it's hitting the 3rd to 4th shift to be honest but just wanted to know if anyone has seen this before. I have al the tuning stuff and computer from you hood. I just gotta hook all the moates stuff up.

Re: 100mph and possible backfire

Anyway to avoid this.... I'm thinking the rev limiter must be moved up or disabled possibly? Just guessing here...

I have found you often just need to do the 3-4 shift manually before it hits the ~4700 rpm rev limiter.

So just leave it in D not Od and shift it into 4th at was it 100 or 105?

I'll try it next time I hit 88/98 miles per hour to see some serious shit!

stock trans wont shift 3-4 at full throttle. You can regovern the shift points to hold 3rd gear to a higher RPM, but it still shouldn't shift into 4th under WOT.

This is not correct.

SyTy stock trans is supposed to have a WOT 3-4 upshift.

I have raced 3 SyTy with a SyTy transmission that don't do the wot 3-4 shift if left in OD. (2 of then mine). They have all done if I shift D to OD. I know of many other like this as well.

Re: 100mph and possible backfire

I thought driving around in OD was to give you the best overall performance of your transmission? How does everyone drive there transmission when driving it normally and when your working up and and down the track?

I mostly drive around in D since OD doesn't kick in till 45mph. But when I punch it getting on the freeway, D until I hit about 95 and the shift it to OD.

Re: 100mph and possible backfire

I race in D. I usually drive around in OD. My truck will do about 120 in 3rd because of my Vorec heads/aftermarket cam extends my rpm band. 120 is faster than I would drive my truck.

Re: 100mph and possible backfire

When I drive in D and its coming to a stop it really downshift@ hard... Anyone one else get harder downshift when in D vs Od? What's the advantage of being in D when racing? Better shift on the ladder, torque converter engaged all the time?
