20G Turbo Info Please

(First off, I will prolly never go with a 20G Turbo)

To Me, Turbos are like Spark Plugs. Some are meant to work,
others can be made to work. Others cant even be forced to work..

I wanna know Basic things, What 20G is the right 20G??
What do they come stock on, so I know what Turbos to
look at and what Turbos not to look at for even 5 seconds..

Thanx,
Rob

Re: 20G Turbo Info Please

A 20G turbo comes standard w/a 14CM housing. It is a direct bolt on turbo.
AFAIK, they do not come on any vehicle stock.

A 20G will work, I would & others would suggest a couple things needed for it to work best on your Sy.

Im not lookin for a 10.50 Truck, Like I said this factory
Turbo will prolly do exactly what I want it to do.. Be Fun..

My Syclone (2414) Trans n Engine have been Rebuilt..
Engine has Vortec heads, Crane 412 cam, Code 59,
KB A2A, 3" Exhaust from turbo to tail (Hopefully Spring)..

I think a 20G would give me the extra lil kick I would be
looking for if/when I want more.. Would Any 20G Work???

Read up on 20G exhaust housings and the effect on your stall/spool up. 8cm, 10cm and 12cm behave differently.

Any chance u know the Link, or Key words that will pull up jus that link?
Instead of 72 Threads that have the words 20G n Stall in the post..

I'm not sure there is one link. The best thing would be to find the turbo compressor maps for each of those and calculate how you expect it to behave.

At a rough estimation, 12cm housing is too big so spool may be laggy = need a higher stall TC. (2600 approx)

10cm is prob about right

8cm is potentially quite restrictive so may stop your top end and limit boost/increase heat.

It's mostly anecdotal evidence from people that have tried it.

FWIW - I had a 20G with a stock stall and it was a dog. My friend has the same turbo now with a Hughes 3000 TC. Too loose.

Re: 20G Turbo Info Please

Do you know from personal exp that it will be laggy ? I've heard otherwise from others about just Rolling a 20g w14cfm housing on a stocker. But hey I'll be trying that here when mine 20g shows up on my door step! So I will keep you all posted ,at worst case scenario I doesn't work ! Best case I prove a lot of people wrong and it works out fine! I'll keep you all posted!

Re: 20G Turbo Info Please

It was very difficult to build any boost at the line. Yes, on both my Ty and his Sy, it was very laggy indeed. Some have advocated using a Blitz wastegate and claim to have excellent results but I submit it is down to the exhaust housing and the heads.

Vortecs and a 412 may go a long way to fixing that but on a stock truck, it was a dog.

Re: 20G Turbo Info Please

Over the years, I have read at least two dozen people say the 20G 14cm2 is laggy with the stock torque converter.

What could I expect to Run at the track with 2lbs of Boost at the line

Running 15 PSI (stock turbo) With Vortecs, 412 Cam, KB A2A (Base/Stock Ostrich Tune) on Fresh Engine n Trans

Re: 20G Turbo Info Please

Why 2 psi launch? I don't know how quickly your Vortecs/412/Stock Turbo launch or is suppose to launch on 2 psi.

A stock heads/cam/turbo launches much better at 5 psi vs 2psi.

From what the others that say there stock Sy/Ty worked great w/a 20g turbo, tell them to post up some videos or time slips.

There will be no best case scenario when it comes to a stock Sy/Ty & bolting in a 20G turbo.
It is going to run so poorly that you will probably want to get rid of it.

But hey, it does not hurt to find out first hand, all you loose is the time it took you to install..

Did you ever time your vehicle with the stock turbo? Just to see how much slower the 20G turbo will be.

I drove my friends stock Syclone that had 80,000 miles on it, It idled fine, engine ran OK, I tell you this is the honest truth, When I floored it, I mean floored it, (we even checked the TB to see if it was open all the way) floored it & the most, I mean most boost it got was 2-3 psi, no matter how long I kept it floored..

Then I had told him to port the turbine housing to port match the exhaust manifold to turbine housing. (There is a huge port mismatch)

Well after that porting, we could muster up to 5-6 PSI @ the absolute most.

So, even when we got to 5-6 PSI with the brakes applied (boost launch) when we would release the brakes, guess what happened,,,,,,,,,,, it launched like a SNAIL. I mean slow, real pathetic.

When is this 20G turbo going to be installed & having you or a friend video taping it so we can archive the results?
I cannot hardly contain myself. This is so exciting.

Reason I said 2PSI is because I never had this/any SyTy at the track..

I will prolly only make 3 passes first trip out with this truck..

Pass 1 0 PSI/Vac
Pass 2 2 PSI
Pass 3 ? PSI

Re: 20G Turbo Info Please

My 20G 14cm had a lot of lag. A roll on the throttle took for ever to boost. It also would not build more than like 2-4lbs of boost on a launch. New torque convertor 2800ish?, and it is great now.

Re: 20G Turbo Info Please

I'm having mine rebuilt.
Stock 8cm2 and wheel, stock center but with 20G wheel and housing.
I believe I have posted a list of TD06 applications which include the 20G before.
It is more common in heavy equipment. It came both with 12cm and 14cm hot sides.

I think you will eventually go with a 20G for that extra that you are looking for. Why? Bolt-on.
Anything else and you will have to change exhaust/intake configuration.
I know very little about everything so take that for what it's worth.

Not sure if it's too late or you would even consider.

Since you are getting your turbo rebuilt, might I suggest getting one of these turbine wheels.
http://shopping.kinugawaturbo.com/turboturbinewheelmitsubishitd06h20gturbocharger-2.aspx

Or this: http://shopping.kinugawaturbo.com/t...sl220g11bladesubarudsmlighter9blades-1-1.aspx

You would have to get your 8 CM turbine housing machined to accept the larger turbine wheel.

Adding this type of turbine wheel will allow your exhaust to breath better & still be able to boost launch just as quick, if not quicker than a stock turbo.
Our stock turbine wheel & turbine housings are restrictive, by adding a larger turbine wheel will allow the engine to breath & make more power & pull harder top end.

Just a thought.

Re: 20G Turbo Info Please

Got a stock replacement already installed:myclone:
20G wheel and housing should be here by saturday:)
Cash is already spent. Don't wanna do restocking fees.
Won't be long till I can drive this truck again.

I have a TD05H 10cm housing I could have gotten cut to fit the stock replacement wheel but didn't want to screw up a good turbo.
