if you dont want to do any trans work (read a new converter) You can do a 20G compressor wheel upgrade. This replaces the stock compressor wheel with the 20G wheel (also requires machining the compressor housing to fit the 20G wheel) . A minor upgrade in turbo performance.

A TD06H 20G with a 10, 12, or 14 cm housing will begin to net you more signifigant results ( the bigger exhaust housing helping top end power). The bigger the better (and the more stall it requires to spool) . On a stock converter I would be looking at the 10 or 12 cm depending on where you want to comprimise, top end or spool up.

If your going to do a converter, you might as well just go to the 14cm (12cm's are rare and usually expensive) and get the benefits of the bigger exhaust housing.

My choice was the 12 cm to balance good top end with drivability and spool up. It required a converter upgrade for me though ( my converter was not the correct stock unit however).

SyTyArchives, I have looked at going to a 8cm housing to get the low end back, even with a 3000 stall converter I can only build 10lbs in first. The truck is a pig with the 20g compared to the 17c. Mine has a 14cm on it right now,but the motor is mostly stock, just bolt-ons. It does pull good after 60mph, but I love the low end of the stock. Any idea why it only builds 10lbs?
Thanks, Matthew

I dont have any personal experience with the 14cm housing yet, dig, jas, or Jeff would be good people to ask about that.

from what I gather a 3000 stall and a 14cm housing should work together, although I couldnt tell you if people are typically able to build over 10psi in first.

I can tell you it isnt a problem with the 12cm.

pros are you get a better flowing compressor wheel with a better effeciency map in stock and higher boost levels.

cons are your still restricting all that air through the little 8cm housing.

you will see better results in power with the bigger housings, but loose spool up speed.

Think about how much you want to spend and where you want to end up with the truck, if your happy but want a very slight upgrade on the stock turbo, the 20g wheel on the 8cm housing would be good for you.

(theres 2 methods to this, use the tdo6h turbine and machine the 8cm, or keep the non H tdo6 and upgrade the compressor wheel) Id reccomend number 2 as it would be cheaper and the turbine would better match the housing.

If your looking for some more high end power, start thinking about the bigger exhaust housings.

start doing some math and figure out if a PTE kit or a mike lee kit wouldnt be comparable in price.

turbo ?

turbo ?

Well i have the stock turbo, and it needs to be rebuilt preety soon (blown center seal) i want a mild upgrade, nothing outrageous, so if can spend the same amount in getting it rebuild, or spending a little more on the 20g upgrade, and keep the existing TC and injectors...

Hahn Racecraft has done up many 20g's with 10cm2 housings. That should work fine on a stock converter (as long as you have a decent exhaust). I believe they are $699 new ?

I don't like the 14cm2 setup on a stock motor. 12cm2 is the biggest *I* would go on the stocker, and that'd require a slight stall converter (too bad it's impossible to find!). That's just me - others have done well using the 14cm2 on a stock motor. I just don't like the lag it introduces.

Waller & Hood's guy, I forget his name, does a lot of custom stuff, and can rebuild your stocker with better flowing parts. Downside is you'll probably pay similar $ and most likely have to wait. I ordered a turbo from him at one time and was waiting for 2-3 months. Hit or miss I guess, but he does good work from what I've seen.

Reed at www.turborepair.com is who Waller sent me to.

I was looking at a 20G/12cm, but found a 20G/14cm i couldn't pass up.
Luckily I got a 3k stall 9/11 when I bought the truck from the prev owner and it has worked out just fine.
A little more lag than stock, but it doesn't take long to spool and it keeps pulling long after the stock turbo had given up.

I can't tell you if it will spool up 10 PSI before launching as I have only had it up to 8 but I am pretty sure it would have kept going if the lights hadn't changed. :D

it's a universal 20G/10cm2, though.

They make 'em to bolt up to the Syty; we got one years ago, I know others that have as well. That one in the pic looks like it'll bolt up.

Ivan ran high 12s with one pretty easily (as opposed to his high 12s on stock turbo with lots of work).

Reed @ TurboRepair has always done turbos for Waller, myself, and tons of others of us. Good people, good quality, and reasonable turnaround. He did the turbo that I currently run (60-1 to Mitsu hybrid) and I love it. I have another one getting done by him (T66 to Mitsu hybrid) that will incorporate the 12cm2 housing that I bought from Green about 3 years ago.

Sadly, I am still running the stocker 8cm2 housing on my 60-1 hybrid (which is why I have the T66 getting built), although it does get me high 11's. God forbid I ever put a backpressure gauge on this heap.

FWIW, if someone throws me a good offer on this 12cm2 housing I may let it go and just run a 14cm2 instead. Otherwise, I'll just keep it.

Nasariobv, talk to Robert Blouch at Blouch turbochargers, 1-717-865-3276 he said he could get any of the housings I wanted 8-14cm. Limit engineering sent me to him as they don't do mitsu turbos. He told me around 150 bucks to machine the 8cm for the 20g. If you already have a housing and you just need it sized it's cheep, but having to buy a housing and have it worked can get up there. I was just going to have them do the 8cm from my stocker for the 20g. I was happy with the performance from the 17c, but seals went bad so it had to go and I found the 20g 14cm on a deal.

i can easily see over 20psi at just past 3k rpm with my 20g/14.
w/o the converter i wouldnt even wanna drive it, though - absolute necessity.
