4.3 L, S10/S15 History

Jason & Guys,

I tried all of the above words in Search and got nothing. I remember a great article ~ 2-3 yrs ago summarizing the history of the 4.3 engine and the S10/S15 line and all the different years. I copied it, but can't find it now. Does anybody remember that one and know how to get to it ?

I'm thinking of getting a '96-2000 S10/S15 SUV w the good Vortechs as a work car w the future possibility of a turbo conversion, since I have alot of the parts from my Typhoon. Plenty of those available - I see 30-40 in this area now - so I need to get ejukated. I notice that some of the ads say "High Output" for the engine - maybe that means the good Vortech heads ? Otherwise, maybe U don't get them ? Any way to tell in the VIN # ? Did any of the years have port injection ?

Thanks for any help.

Re: 4.3 L, S10/S15 History

Thanx, Jimmy, that was the article.

BTW, guys, has anyone turbo'ed a 96+ 4.3 "High Output" engine w the Vortech heads and Port injection ?

Does that engine have a distributorless ignition ? Would the stock ECM work w a turbo setup ?

Would the SyTy exhaust manifolds bolt up to the 96+ 4.3 block ?

TIA

theres a few 96+ trucks running a turbo. alot more run superchargers. the stock injection assembly is junk though. its a spider injection setup and the injectors are not upgradeable which make it horrible for anything over 250ish hp. the 2114 conversion is becoming more and more popular with the newer trucks (thats what i did). some people mod the stock lower intake for multi-port

they still use a distributor, but the ecm can be programmed to work with boost, its a MAF system, not a speed density. and the exhaust manifolds will bolt to vortec heads

Good info. What is the 2114 Conversion ? Does that let U upgrade the injectors ?

So, the IGN system is ~ the same as the SyTy HEI w a distributor ? So, does the MAF have the same 255 limit that the GN has ?

the 2114 is a carb'd intake made by edelbrock. machine the intake runners, weld in injector bungs, machine the fuel rails and you got a multi port manifold so you can upgrade injectors. heres a pic of my 2114 getting machined:

the ignition system isnt much different. my 94 was still a speed density system so i dont have any experience with the newer stuff. i do know that MAF limits can be changed with tuning programs like tunercat of LS1-edit

Clone,

Sounds like a fairly sophisticated Mod that not that many would have experience doing. What machine shop R U using ? Sounds somewhat experimental. You would have to get the injector bung holes and angle just right. Then how would U make the bung protrusions for the injectors to seal into ?

Re: 4.3 L, S10/S15 History

the machine shop i am having it done at is in cincinatti. the injector bungs are being machined now and they will sit ontop of the holes and be welded onto the intake runners, the injectors would seat into them

i should have more pics within the next few days. if your interested in this i can set you up with the guy. he has a modded 2114 on his truck. its a 12 sec truck with 7 psi through a powerdyne supercharger (no intercooler). you would buy the intake and have it sent to him. he can do pretty much whatever you want. i am only having the intake runners machined, bungs welded in, fuel rails machined, and rail hold downs. he is very reasonable on price.

Re: 4.3 L, S10/S15 History

So, this Edelbrock manifold is made for the 4.3 L ? Didn't know they made anything for V-6's.

Sounds like U R the 1st one to attempt a Turbo on this engine. Let me know how much it ends up costing U and how it works. I may be interested and maybe this shop of yours can get some more business from me and others.

So, is this the only major Mod necessary to turbo the 96+ 4.3L ? The stock ECM will work and the SyTy exhaust manifolds will bolt up ? I would guess that we will have to make some inlet tubes to go from the MAF to the turbo and then from the turbo to an Intercooler and then to the Throttle body ? Wonder if we could use the stock IC and bottom water cooler ? Probably need to make special mounting brackets for both.

Then hopefully a PTE downpipe would fit in and go to the stock exhaust system ? What kind of a compression nratio do these engines have ?

My shop is telling that it might be just as cheap to just buy another SyTy, which may be true, but the Vortech heads should be superior to the stockers, and there wouldn't be any mounting problems.

Re: 4.3 L, S10/S15 History

2114 is for the 4.3

i'm not theonly guy puttng syty tuff on a 2nd gen. lots of guys have turbo'd the 96+ motors. mach performance had a turbo kit out, but it proved to be junk and they had horrible customer service issues, i dont think they make that kit anymore. at s10forum.com, there is a guy doing exactly what i think you are looking for. he converted the stock lower manifold to multi port and hes got a thread going in the blower and bottles section, might be worth a look

i'm sure mike (thats whos converting my 2114 for me) will be happy to do more conversions. i know how much he charges, if you want to know some prices PM me.

as for being the only mod needed, it would only be necessary if your wanting more the 280ish hp. thats the generally accepted safe limit of the stock injector assembly (needs an FMU to get there). although, people have put down over 400whp on the stock injectors, programming and a cartech FMU. emissions is also a factor as there are no EGR provisions on the 2114. but yes the stock ecm would work, as would stock syty exh manifolds. as long as the maf is placed after the BOV its fine.

i will be finding out soon if the stock syty down pipe will work on a 2nd gen s10. most vortec motors have around a 9:1 compression ratio

and i dont know if buying another syty would be cheaper. you'll be surprised just how cheap it is for mike to convert a 2114
