400 dollar 50K mile 4l80E Do it or not?

I've got a chance to buy a working 1998 4l80E from a 1 ton truck with 50k on it for 400 bucks. Guy claims its in awesome shape and was going in some kinda muscle car.. nova etc.. But being a 1998 i think it will hook directly to my BS3 but i'm hoping to get away with just the transgo kit and a converter to run this truck in the 10-11's.. I'm just wondering in stock form side by side i'm trying to figure out if i'm trying to go that route if i should shoot for the later 2003ish LS1 style that are supposed to be stronger stock.

Whats everyones feelings all around ?

Side note, the trans has been sitting for 2-3 years in a garage on a shelf waiting.. think this time out would mess anything up?

core value is 400.00 buy it worst case you open it its just sell it for 400.00 as a core

Thats what i was thinking.. I'm going to call him and offer 350 if he does that i'll be on the road picking it up. But i think i could get a rough later model one cheaper and do a total rebuild

deal so far

1998 4l80E with 47K on it ..$350 dollars in what he described as perfect condition.. engine and trans was pulled from his totaled truck.

I'll post pics tomorrow..

I went through with it, 350 bucks. Once i got to the guys house he was super nice, trans looked awesome spent about 10-15 minutes looking everything over to see if there is anything big.. cracks, missing tabs, broken stuff. Everything looks awesome but the shifter bar was bent but it still moved fine. Guy said he bought the truck with like 38-39k on it to make it a repo tow truck.. said he drove it for 2-4k then had all the tow truck stuff installed.. 4k miles later it was hit and totaled in a side impact. Said he could have saved the truck it was still drivable but the payout was good and they let him keep the truck cheap and he's sold off all the parts.

so now i'm short a 100 dollar shift kit.. maybe other parts.. gotta ask george blake and some people and a what 1000 dollar TC lol.. if it wasen't for the converter i'd put it in now.. instead i'll wait to see the truck actually run and move.. get hooked and wanna spend the money on the 4l80E.. unless someone wants to buy my 35k mile 4l60E with full trans go kit and random 2800-3000 rpm stall for enough to finish the project.
